Miami is a unique place for many reasons: the way people talk, the fact that so few of the residents are originally from Miami, and how strange things are basically commonplace. It also has a very unique music scene: one is the stereotypical party scene and the other is an underground mixture of rock bands, jazz bands, soul bands, experimental bands and cover bands. Both of them, especially the underground scene, come with their own culture. Within that culture, there are certain things that become clichés, not unlike the content of the popular “S—t Miami Girls (and Guys) Say” video. Without further ado, I present to you "Things People in the Local Scene Say" (with input from local musician, Krystal Ramos of Miami band Joysticks and Quarter Slots):

  • "BOOM!" usually used after something good happens, like finishing an EP, announcing a tour, winning a Battle of the Bands, an EP or album doing well, or even announcing a party. Also coincidentally the new TNT slogan, which never fails to make me laugh because of its usage in the local scene.
  • "This is why we have no scene here!" Almost always preceded by a rant. Used when the ranter wants one fixed thing to blame for a situation or is feeling nostalgic.
  • "BIG things coming!" Used when musicians are working on a project that they can’t tell fully their fans about just yet, but still want to get them excited.
  • "Can’t wait to get in the studio – lots of things in store for you!" An extension of "BIG things coming!"
  • "Support your scene and [insert action here]" If you follow even one local band on social media, you’re bound to run into this. It can be found on just about any show flyer, status, or tweet as a reason you should, for example, go to a show.
  • "Killing it with person A (or at xyz place)!" or "XYZ band is killing it right now!" Usually means that the poster is having a good time with someone or having a good show. Or that a band they’re watching is having a good show.
  • "Y’all are missing out!" Usually followed by “if you’re not at xyz show right now” because it’s a good show.
  • “Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook/Twitter/Tumblr/Soundcloud/ReverbNation!”: Bands get creative with this one, to an amusing degree sometimes. For example, one Miami band, Falseta, likes to throw Netflix and occasionally eHarmony in there as well.

If you feel like I missed any, be sure to add your favorites in the comments!
