Oscar Noms: Snubs Plus Historical Nods

2015 Academy Awards Presented In February

Michelle F. Solomon, ATCA, FFCC

The nominations for this year's Academy Awards were announced Thursday. There were a few surprises, but, most notably, the absence of applause for female directors.

Although the film "Selma" received a Best Picture nomination, its director did not. Director Ava DuVernay would have been the first African-American woman nominated in the category.

Also, Angelina Jolie was snubbed for her film "Unbroken" both for her actors, her direction and the film itself.

There were some history making nominations. Meryl Streep earned yet another nomination (she now has 19 Oscar nominations, an Academy record) for “Into the Woods" while Robert Duvall made history becoming the oldest actor at 84 to earn a nomination for his role in “The Judge.”

Leading the pack in nominations is the film “Birdman” earning nine nods, including Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor for Edward Norton and Best Movie. “The Grand Budapest Hotel” also tied for the lead in nominations with nine.

“Boyhood” also earned multiple nominations. The movie is expected to sweep the Oscars. The 2014 coming-of-age drama was shot intermittently over a 12-year period from May 2002 to October 2013. It details the growth of a young boy and his older sister to adulthood.

The Academy Awards will take place Feb. 22 at the Dolby Theater at the Hollywood & Highland Center in Los Angeles, and  will be broadcast live on ABC at 7 p.m. ET. Neil Patrick Harris will host.
