Slack Bay

Monday, May 29, 2017 from 6:45 PM to 10:45 PM - English

Summer 1910. The bourgeois and extremely eccentric Van Peteghem family—among them Juliette Binoche, Fabrice Luchini, and Valeria Bruni Tedeschi—have settled in for another summer at their cliff-top villa overlooking the picturesque Slack Bay. Their leisurely rhythm of sunbathing and seaside constitutionals is soon interrupted by the arrival of two bumbling inspectors investigating a string of tourists gone missing (and serving full-on Keystone Kops). As the macabre mysteries mount and love blossoms between the family’s genderqueer teen and the son of a local fisherman, Binoche and company ratchet the slapstick up to eleven. It’s no wonder director Bruno Dumont (Li’l Quinquin, Camille Claudel 1915) cites Peter Sellers, Monty Python, and Laurel and Hardy as cinematic influences for his delightful foray into winking, absurdist farce. It Shoulda Been You

Monday, May 29, 2017 various times - English

  • Book and lyrics by Brian Hargrove.
  • Music by Barbara Anselmi.

Audiences are cordially invited to the wedding of the year, and the most entertaining and hysterically funny musical comedies to come direct from Broadway to Miami in years. The bride is Jewish. The groom is Catholic. Her mother is a force of nature; his mother is a tempest in a cocktail shaker. And when the bride’s ex-boyfriend shows up, the perfect wedding starts to unravel faster than one can whistle, “Here Comes the Bride.” USA Today called this South Florida premiere “endearingly old-fashioned in spirit and decidedly contemporary in execution.

Childhood Memories from the Other Side of the Water

Monday, May 29, 2017 from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM - English

MDC Museum of Art + Design presents Childhood Memories from the Other Side of the Water, a visual autobiography depicting childhood experiences and recollections of Cuba by artist Eduardo del Valle consisting of a new series of thought-provoking photographs never exhibited before.

Independently over the past nine years, Eduardo del Valle has worked on a visual autobiography of his experiences and observations central to his childhood, his recollections of Cuba between 1951 to 1961, when he left the country of his birth at the age of ten, never to return. The photographic series Childhood Memories from the Other Side of the Water portrays certain aspects of the artists’ memories that have stayed with him, wedged deep at the far end of his recollection, aspects that have challenged del Valle forever in an unfading fashion. The project culminated into 88 autobiographical photographs, recreating memories shot entirely outside of the island.

The Exile Experience: A Journey to Freedom

Monday, May 29, 2017 from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM - English

The Exile Experience: Journey to Freedom is a pictorial account of the struggles that the Cuban exile community has endured since Fidel Castro's rise to power, and the successes they have achieved in the United States. Having covered the Cuban exile community and its struggle for freedom extensively throughout the years, Miami Dade College and The Miami Herald Media Company now present this journalistic chronology, which showcases the spirit and accomplishments of the Cuban American community. The permanent exhibition is housed at the College’s National Historic Landmark Freedom Tower, itself central to the story of Cubans in the United States.

MDC’s Freedom Tower was operated by the U.S. Government as a reception center for Cuban refugees from 1962 to 1974. “The building is significant because it represents the important story of the Cuban exodus to America and resettlement during the Cold War,” reports the U.S. Department of the Interior, which has also called the Freedom Tower the “Ellis Island of the South.” Though it operated in that capacity for only 12 years, the building has become an icon representing the faith that democracy brought to troubled lives, the generosity of the American people and a hopeful beginning that assured thousands a new life in a new land.

AFAR - Lujan Candria

Next date: May 29, 2017 - click here for time schedule - English

Artium Art Gallery Miami is pleased to present “AFAR” a dialogue between memory and photography. Lujan Candria´s photographic project “AFAR” seeks to awake in the spectators concrete sensations and activate similar memory traces, tied to their memories; through intentionally indefinite and blurred landscapes worked by different compositions and filters of light.

The exhibit is an opportunity to rest from a life destined to constant movement; an island to stop for a second to reminisce and, through the perceptions of our past experiences, get back to feel ourselves and reconnect with others.
