Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU Irene Williams: Queen of Lincoln Road

Sunday, Jul 23, 2017 various times - English

Miami Beach has always been home to many colorful people. One of them was Irene Williams. Every workday for more than 40 years, Irene dressed in one of her vibrant fashions from a collection of more than 100 handmade hats and outfits, walked to her small office on Lincoln Road. One morning in 1995, Irene was spotted by Eric Smith, a New York City designer, entrepreneur, and founder of E.G. Smith Socks.

A friendship ensued and over the next decade, Eric documented on film Irene's outsider couture, and the heartfelt affection they shared and produced an award winning documentary titled Irene Williams Queen of Lincoln Road. When Irene died in 2004, she left her colorful collection of hats, photos and letters to Smith which are included in the exhibit. In addition to the Irene Williams Collection, the exhibition will include hats and photos on loan from Isabel Bernfeld Anderson and George Neary. The exhibit is sponsored by Robert Arthur Segall Family Foundation, Isabel Bernfeld Anderson, Merle & Danny Weiss, and Pauline Winick.

Toba Khedoori

Sunday, Jul 23, 2017 various times - English

Toba Khedoori explores the artist’s nuanced and powerful body of work. Born in Sydney, Australia in 1964, Khedoori has lived and worked in Los Angeles since 1990. Her early works are notable for their precise draftsmanship and for their use of negative space often at a very large scale. Khedoori frequently depicts architectural forms from distanced perspectives, rendering commonplace objects and spaces familiar yet decontextualized. In recent years, she has transitioned from paper to canvas, producing smaller-scale works that hover between representation and abstraction. Like her earlier compositions, these works are enigmatic and acutely detailed; in an art world awash with rapidly moving images and saturated colors, Khedoori remains committed to the silent, slow, and exacting process of working by hand. The exhibition is the first major museum presentation of Khedoori’s new paintings and her first survey in fifteen years.

John Dunkley: Neither Day nor Night

Sunday, Jul 23, 2017 various times - English

This exhibition presents the work of John Dunkley (b. 1891, Savanna-la-Mar, Jamaica; d. 1947, Kingston), widely considered to be one of Jamaica’s most important historical artists. John Dunkley: Neither Day nor Night will include paintings from the 1930s and ‘40s alongside a smaller selection of carved-wood and stone sculptures. Dunkley’s paintings are defined by their distinctive dark palette, detailed imagery—often landscapes––and psychologically suggestive underpinnings. His intimate sculptures reflect more figurative elements—people and animals—and offer insights into his unique iconography. Although his work is well represented in the collection of the National Gallery of Jamaica, Kingston, as well as in international private collections, Dunkley has not been the focus of a solo exhibition since the 1970s, and never before outside Jamaica. This exhibition represents a unique opportunity to bring together a substantial grouping of his work and to create an international context for its study.

John Akomfrah: Tropikos

Sunday, Jul 23, 2017 from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM - English

John Akomfrah: Tropikos presents the artist’s 2016 film Tropikos, which examines the original encounter between European explorers and the people of Africa in the 16th century. This large-scale video installation was filmed in the Tamar Valley and Plymouth, England—a location with significant, if often forgotten, ties to the slave industry: it is where the first British slaving excursion set sail for Africa. The region and its waterways would become England’s primary hub for the slave trade, serving as the point of departure for numerous major expeditions and as the base for the industry’s bureaucratic functions.

Youssef Nabil: I Saved My Belly Dancer

Sunday, Jul 23, 2017 from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM - English

Featuring actors Salma Hayek and Tahar Rahim, I Saved My Belly Dancer is a lavish production by Youssef Nabil (b. 1972, Cairo; lives in New York) filmed in high definition with a color treatment reminiscent of hand-tinted vintage photographs. The film is a hypnotic allegory of Egypt’s cultural heritage and the shifting perceptions of the position of women in the region. In the Middle East, belly dancing was once considered a high art form, and would be regularly performed at weddings and other kinds of celebrations. In recent years such elegant customs—together with their associations with a relatively liberal attitude toward women—have been increasingly placed under threat by the rise of conservative religious sentiments on one hand and the objectification and sexualization of women within commercial imagery on the other. In this sense, the film laments the fading of once-proud and meaningful traditions amid the changing ideological circumstances of the artist’s native country. At the same time, it hints at the possibility that such legacies may yet survive both in memory and in exile.

Childhood Memories from the Other Side of the Water

Sunday, Jul 23, 2017 from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM - English

MDC Museum of Art + Design presents Childhood Memories from the Other Side of the Water, a visual autobiography depicting childhood experiences and recollections of Cuba by artist Eduardo del Valle consisting of a new series of thought-provoking photographs never exhibited before.

Independently over the past nine years, Eduardo del Valle has worked on a visual autobiography of his experiences and observations central to his childhood, his recollections of Cuba between 1951 to 1961, when he left the country of his birth at the age of ten, never to return. The photographic series Childhood Memories from the Other Side of the Water portrays certain aspects of the artists’ memories that have stayed with him, wedged deep at the far end of his recollection, aspects that have challenged del Valle forever in an unfading fashion. The project culminated into 88 autobiographical photographs, recreating memories shot entirely outside of the island.

The Exile Experience: A Journey to Freedom

Sunday, Jul 23, 2017 from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM - English

The Exile Experience: Journey to Freedom is a pictorial account of the struggles that the Cuban exile community has endured since Fidel Castro's rise to power, and the successes they have achieved in the United States. Having covered the Cuban exile community and its struggle for freedom extensively throughout the years, Miami Dade College and The Miami Herald Media Company now present this journalistic chronology, which showcases the spirit and accomplishments of the Cuban American community. The permanent exhibition is housed at the College’s National Historic Landmark Freedom Tower, itself central to the story of Cubans in the United States.

MDC’s Freedom Tower was operated by the U.S. Government as a reception center for Cuban refugees from 1962 to 1974. “The building is significant because it represents the important story of the Cuban exodus to America and resettlement during the Cold War,” reports the U.S. Department of the Interior, which has also called the Freedom Tower the “Ellis Island of the South.” Though it operated in that capacity for only 12 years, the building has become an icon representing the faith that democracy brought to troubled lives, the generosity of the American people and a hopeful beginning that assured thousands a new life in a new land.
