Tino Sehgal: This Situation

Saturday, Apr 28, 2018 from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM - English

Tino Sehgal creates works that are constructed situations which question the traditional subject-object relationship of visual art, and in which the interaction between the visitor and the work takes a central position. Sehgal takes language, singing, dancing, and other modes of behavior as his artistic material, often generating immersive artworks that are felt more than they are seen. This Situation (2007) enables a conversation that throws into question our self-image as a society and our roles as individuals within that society.Sehgal is a Berlin-based artist whose work has been widely shown internationally. He won the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2013. Among many other places, Sehgal's work has been exhibited at the Guggenheim in New York, the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the 12th Havana Biennial, and the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo in Brazil.

This Situation is part of the Living Together Performance Series, a year-long cross-disciplinary series featuring performance art, installations, film and video screenings, readings, talks, and workshops, reflecting the cultural, social, and political realities of how we live now.

Florencia en el Amazonas

Saturday, Apr 28, 2018 at 7:00 PM - English

An opera star goes down the Amazon on a magical quest.

Inspired by the writings of the great Gabriel García Márquez (One Hundred Years of Solitude), Daniel Catán’s Florencia en el Amazonas is one of the most lyrical and melodious new operas of the past 30 years, embraced by critics and audiences everywhere it has played. This story of a Brazilian soprano’s emotionally fraught journey back to her homeland offers a brilliant display of magical realism and pushes the operatic form to new limits of imagination. To portray a great artist, FGO has engaged a great artist Ana María Martínez, acclaimed as one of the most beloved Butterflys in recent Metropolitan Opera history.

MOAD MDC - Jack Hirschman: Poetry and Jazz

Saturday, Apr 28, 2018 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM - English

Poetry and Jazz finds San Francisco writer Jack Hirschman joined by the Terni Jazz Orchestra Ensemble for an innovative evening of music, poetry, and politics, featuring the poet’s distinctive voice as an integral part of original music compositions. The longstanding collaboration between Hirschman and the group of Italian musicians, led by composer/arranger Marco Collazzoni and saxophonist Francesco Guzzetta, began at the International Poetry Festival in Sarajevo, Bosnia, thanks to the patronage of Casa della Poesia di Salerno, and culminated with the recording of a CD presented at Teatro Valle in Rome in 2014.

Hirschman is one of the most distinctive voices of the American counterculture, known for his radical engagement with both poetry and politics. His long literary career as acclaimed poet, essayist, and translator is interlaced with artists like Charles Bukowski, Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Born in 1933, he grew up in the Bronx and, as a young man, had an early brush with fame when Ernest Hemingway wrote him a letter, later published as “A Letter to a Young Writer.” Hirschman has lived in California since the 1970s. In 2002, he received the Book Award Life Achievement from the Before Columbus Foundation and in 2006 he was named Poet Laureate of San Francisco. Hirschman has published more than fifty volumes of poetry and has translated radical poets from around the world from Russian, French, German, Greek, Italian, Spanish, Albanian, Yiddish, Vietnamese, and Creole.

Between a view and a milestone

Saturday, Apr 28, 2018 various times - English

Between a view and a milestone presents works by ArtCenter/South Florida’s studio residents that offer contemplative meditations on place. While place can imply a certain level of geographic specificity, determining placehood can be difficult and requires certain physical and intangible elements to make it so. The exhibition’s title refers to a visual device used in landscape painting, in which the painter includes an object in the foreground as a means of framing the view of the landscape. Places call for this sort of demarcation, but they also call for a more emotive connection that is highly dependent upon the individual occupying it. Places are felt as much as they are physically constructed.

In this exhibition, perspective– both spatial and interpretive– plays an important role in framing the places these works address. A video game finds its protagonist navigating through an amorphous landscape that simultaneously inspires awe and dread. A set of sculptures comprised of materials native to Miami’s urban topography are used to further investigate ideas of mobility and labor. A lone figure in a grassy field desperately bobbing for apples to the sound of a mournful poem considers how recent events and contentious histories can oftentimes define the places we live in. The works in this exhibition attempt to understand the evocative nature of place and invite more nuanced explorations of time, memory and identity.

Dangerous Women

Saturday, Apr 28, 2018 from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM - English

Selections from the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art

The Old and New Testaments are replete with female characters-good and bad wives, courageous heroines, and deceptive femme fatales. While some women saved their people, were paragons of wifely virtue, or repented their sins to pursue lives of virtue, others were purveyors of sin, harlots or hussies, or deadly temptresses and seductresses. Even if it was through their misbehavior, all of these women – from Judith and Esther to Salome and Mary Magdalene to Delilah, Lot's Daughters, and Potiphar's Wife, to name but a few – shaped biblical history.

Dangerous Women will present more than twenty paintings and etchings from the rich holdings of the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. The exhibition explores women of the Bible as portrayed by 16th and 17th-century artists, including Pietro da Cortona, and Jan Saenredam. The exhibition will conclude with a modern and contemporary coda: Robert Henri's sensuous Salome from 1901 and Mickalene Thomas’ Portrait of Mamma Bush I, 2010, a reminder of the tenacious appeal of the subject.

This exhibition has been organized by The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, the State Art Museum of Florida, Florida State University, Sarasota, FL.

Support for this exhibition is made possible through the FUNDING ARTS NETWORK, INC. and the Miami-Dade County Tourist Development Council, the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners.

The Exile Experience: A Journey to Freedom

Saturday, Apr 28, 2018 from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM - English

The Exile Experience: Journey to Freedom is a pictorial account of the struggles that the Cuban exile community has endured since Fidel Castro's rise to power, and the successes they have achieved in the United States. Having covered the Cuban exile community and its struggle for freedom extensively throughout the years, Miami Dade College and The Miami Herald Media Company now present this journalistic chronology, which showcases the spirit and accomplishments of the Cuban American community. The permanent exhibition is housed at the College’s National Historic Landmark Freedom Tower, itself central to the story of Cubans in the United States.

MDC’s Freedom Tower was operated by the U.S. Government as a reception center for Cuban refugees from 1962 to 1974. “The building is significant because it represents the important story of the Cuban exodus to America and resettlement during the Cold War,” reports the U.S. Department of the Interior, which has also called the Freedom Tower the “Ellis Island of the South.” Though it operated in that capacity for only 12 years, the building has become an icon representing the faith that democracy brought to troubled lives, the generosity of the American people and a hopeful beginning that assured thousands a new life in a new land.

Partnering with architects and artists, this exhibition explores the various ways in which innovative design can be used for humanitarian purposes and how it can help those affected by the current refugee crisis, mass migration and natural disasters. Informed by these interests in art history, the current presentation of the permanent collection—installed thematically within two rooms on the first floor and four rooms on the second—is organized around the historical criteria of genres within Western painting and the traditional hierarchy of genres that developed out of the Renaissance period and was promoted within European art academies up through the 19th century.

Haroon Mirza’s ACIDGEST at PAMM

Saturday, Apr 28, 2018 various times - English

Haroon Mirza (b. 1977, London) is a multimedia artist who works with audiovisual materials, electronic equipment, amplifiers, and found objects to create immersive environments and kinetic sculptures. His work amplifies phenomena that are often imperceptible such as electricity and seeks to create or distort the relationship between optics and acoustics, giving unexpected visual and sensorial analogs to what we hear. Mirza uses a particular visual and material vocabulary to modify architectural spaces, including colored neon and sculptural acoustic foam, creating installations that offer a precise, highly mediated experience of sound and light.

PAMM has commissioned Mirza to produce a new work for its double-height gallery. For this project, A C I D G E S T, he will create a specialized technical system that will transmit an electrical current through speakers and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that act in coordination with one another so that different colors are activated by corresponding noise frequencies. This system will produce a choreographed experience of sound and light based on a concrete poem the artist has created, which serves as a score for a dynamic installation that redefines our phenomenological experience of the space.

By The People: Designing a Better America

Saturday, Apr 28, 2018 from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM - English

The first design exhibition scheduled in the MDC Museum of Art and Design after its April 2018 reopening, By the People: Designing a Better America will explore the challenges faced by urban, suburban and rural communities in the U.S. and its bordering countries. Based on more than two years of field research—traveling to shrinking post-industrial cities, sprawling metro regions, struggling rural towns, border regions, areas impacted by natural and man-made disaster, and places of persistent poverty, this exhibition presents collaborative designs for more equitable, inclusive and sustainable communities.

Organized by the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian American Design Museum, and curated by Cynthia E. Smith, the exhibition features sixty design projects from every region across the United States, the exhibition will highlight design solutions that expand access to education, food, health care and affordable housing; increase social and economic inclusion; offer improved alternative transportation options; and provide a balanced approach to land use between the built and natural environment. By the People aims to empower visitors to see themselves as designers—not just of objects, but also of ideas, strategies, and solutions that improve their daily lives. The exhibition will showcase the innovative and impactful actions generated through design, and inspire creative problem-solving at local, regional, national, and even international levels.
