The thrilling clapping of hands, the rhythmic stamping of feet—flamenco is a dance that makes its own music.

Flamenco traces its origins to the Andalusian Gypsies of Spain, but flamenco is a term that refers to both dance and music. While most people are familiar with flamenco dance and its vigorous movements and precision, flamenco music may be instrumental or vocal, and is characterized by its unique improvisational style. It can be performed alone or as as an accompaniment to its sister dance.

If you like flamenco music and dance, you might want to buy your tickets now for Flamenco Festival Miami—the hottest flamenco event in the country. Last year’s event was sold out.

Romance is the order of the day at the Romance in a Can Film Festival, which showcases European movies about love.

“Preserving romance during Valentine’s week, far away from the war and violence, is my vision for the film festival,” said Isabelle Landman, executive director of Red Chemistry Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the work of independent European filmmakers.

Romance in a Can runs February 6-15 at indoor and outdoor venues throughout the greater Miami area.
The festival will screen more than 20 independent first-run foreign feature films from 14 countries. Many of the films will make their United States premiere at the festival and feature well-known stars, including Juliette Binoche, Julie Delpy, Giancarlo Giannini, Derek Jacobi, Tovah Feldshuh and Irene Jacob. Actress Clarice van Houten will attend the festival on February 13 in a special salute to Dutch cinema which will feature a screening of the film Love is All.
