Dali Sculpture Exhibit
Opens Story and
Photos by Mary Damiano
Bursts of rain could not dampen the festivities at
Merrick Park in Coral Gables October 4, when the
Salvador Dali Monumental Sculpture exhibit officially
opened.
Coral Gables mayor Don Slesnick, gallery owner Jean
Bernard and a gaggle of friends and officials broke out
the giant ceremonial scissors to cut the big red ribbon
and open the sculpture garden to the public.
Bernard, owner of the Art+ gallery, gathered the Dali
sculptures from private collections all over the world
at his own expense. In addition to the large-scale
sculptures, which are scattered throughout Merrick Park,
smaller sculptures are on display inside Art+. The works
of art will enjoy a six-month stay in Coral Gables,
coinciding with mega art event Art Basel in early
December, and helping to cement Miami’s growing
reputation as a major art city.
After the ceremony, guests enjoyed a cocktail
reception on the third floor on the Mediterranean style
mall, with hors d’oevres by Via Quadronno.
The classy and sophisticated event brought out the
art lover in the guests, many of whom wondered why
surrealist master Dali is not more known for his
intriguing sculpture.
