Artist Spotlight
Name: David Vance
City: Miami
Birthplace: Rochester, NY
Artistic Medium: Photography
How did you get started?
My parents bought me a darkroom kit from Sears when I was 14. I had been
drawing and painting since I was 10, and they were nervous that I would become
an “artist.” Whoops! They thought photography would be more commercial. What
they didn't understand is that art is in the soul. It’s not really a choice.
Who or what are your influences?
My mother's fashion magazines... Photographers Richard Avedon (mostly) Francesco
Scavullo, Irving Penn, William Mortenson, and George Hurrell. The art of the
Renaissance, and 19th century romanticism.
What inspires your work?
Beauty in all forms—faces, bodies, attitudes, cinema, literature, nature.
How does Miami/South Florida influence your work?
Living in paradise is a constant source of inspiration. The beach, the
skies—especially in winter—the light. The extraordinarily diverse people and
culture. It's an amazing place
How would you describe your work?
Neoclassic, painterly, sensual.
What has been the most unusual reaction to your work
from the public?
Surprise that I'm not involved in film or commercials.
What would you like to achieve as an artist?
Great wealth. (Oh, you wanted a realistic answer?) I guess to have the luxury to
work with a really talented team of experts on projects of high visibility,
instead of being a one-man band. Also, to always inspire others to see and
acknowledge the beauty in everyone and everything around them. To focus on the
world in it's most flattering light.
