Artist Spotlight

Tatiana Capitan

Tatiana Capitan

Name: Tatiana Capitan

City: Miami

Birthplace: Brooklyn, New York

Artistic Medium: Mostly I paint in acrylics and draw in ink, but I love all artistic mediums, and so also delve into photography and making jewelry.

How did you get started?
I guess my mom or dad must’ve put a pen or pencil in my hand and a paper in my face, and I’ve been drawing ever since, picking up different art forms as my life continues. My mom, my schools, my travels, the people I’ve met along the way, the music—certainly all play important roles in “getting me started” and allowing those artistic tendencies to grow and develop.

Who or what are your influences?
The world around me, the aesthetic of everything I see, people, my dad’s artist friend Fernando who I met in Palma de Mallorca (he painted El Beso on the bathroom wall of El Totem; that’s influenced some of my work). There was a time I was really in love with Frida Kahlo’s work (and I still am), so I started doing more surrealist work. That’s when I began to really love painting. Before that I drew still lifes, portraits of friends, pets, etc. Since then I’ve painted and drawn every image that pops into my mind’s eye.

What inspires your work?
I think life inspires my work. I have to draw. I feel like I can’t let the images go unknown, never to be seen, wandering somewhere in the ether.

How does Miami/South Florida influence your work?
The sky is gorgeous. I painted a large image of the sunset on canvas, for my stepdad to give as a gift to a friend of his. And of course we’ve got the Everglades here. I love driving down 8th Street and taking pictures of whatever pleases me, which is just about everything.

How would you describe your work?
Surrealist for the most part.

What has been the most unusual reaction to your work from the public?
My work hasn’t had much opportunity thus far to be shown publicly, so I wouldn’t know about how the public would react to my work. But the people who have seen my work (friends, family, and some random people online) have had positive reactions. The most unusual reaction would be my friend David telling me my tattoo (of a fish with a human face) looks like a foot.

What would you like to achieve as an artist?
I would like my work to be seen, and for people to have my work up in their homes and/or working places. I think it would be awesome to go somewhere and say, “Hey, look! I did that!”  Plus it would be nice to make a living doing something I love.

Upcoming shows:  None for sure at this moment.

Where is your work available?
