Thrills and Chills without the Spills
Florida Dance Festival Offers Something
for Every Dance Lover

By Liz Potter

Keigwin and Company

Keigwin and Company, a New York City modern dance troupe, will perform at the Florida Dance Festival, which runs through July 1

Florida Dance Festival 2006 presents exciting programs that showcase world-class choreographers with superb performances by extraordinarily talented student and professional dancers.  Contemporary dance troupes from Florida, the United States and London will bring multi-cultural diversity to the 11-day festival, which runs through July 1.  Experimental dance groups add unique perspectives to this eclectic mix, making the Florida Dance Festival a destination for all lovers of dance.

“The Annual Florida Dance Festival is a major arts event in the southeastern United States, which brings together a diverse community of choreographers, teachers, students and performers for intense study, exchange of ideas and fun,” says Tom Thielen, director of the Florida Dance Association.

The Ghost Light Series Breathes New Life into Forgotten Plays

By Elizabeth Fernandez

Kevin Johnson

Kevin Johnson, founder and director of the Ghost Light Series

When classic plays slip through the cracks, the Ghost Light Series comes to the rescue.  Actor Kevin Johnson created the series of staged readings in an effort to revive some of his favorite plays.

“In this theatre community, most of the programming focuses on musicals and original works,” Johnson said.  “I felt like I missed the works that we used to read in school.”

Since 2004, Johnson has given both actors and audience members the opportunity to experience some of these forgotten gems.  All the performances are free of charge and the actors and directors volunteer their time.  There is minimal blocking and set design and actors perform their parts with script in hand.  The Ghost Light Series will present the first of their summer series, William Inge’s Summer Brave, on June 27 in Wilton Manors.
