Party Ultra-Cool Art Basel Turns Miami Beach into
an Art Hotspot
By Melanie Klesse
“This is the largest museum on earth for four
days.”

So says Bob Goodman, Florida representative of
Art Basel, referring to the magnitude of the
sister event to Art Basel Switzerland, “the most
important annual art show worldwide for the past
36 years.” Or at least that's what their public
relations agents say and—despite a possible
occupational hazard of a lack of objectivity—it
doesn't seem as if this statement is far from the
truth.
The “American sister” is throwing a party on
the Beach. And what a party it is. |

When Craig Fashbaugh decided to form a gay
men's chorus in Miami Beach in 1999, he went to
Miami Beach City Hall to find out from the Arts
Council to he needed any licenses for this new
business. He was met with chuckles of disbelief
and then this comment: “Oh my. You mean a gay
event on Miami Beach where we won't need
ambulances?”
“The first couple of years I was here and would
talk to people about doing a chorus, they said it
would never happen, you won't get it you won't
organize it,” Fashbaugh says. “Then they'd say,
‘Well, you might get the members but you won't get
the audience.' We proved all that wrong.”
