Americans are a very proud people, and one thing that makes us so proud is our diversity. February is Black History Month, a time when we reflect on the many contributions made to this country by Black Americans, and there are several events in South Florida celebrating the artistic achievements of one of the cultures that make this country such a melting pot.

ArtCenter South Florida is presenting a special exhibition called “Black to Black: a discourse about color and race.”  The exhibit features the work of ArtCenter resident artists Vickie Pierre, Kerry Phillips, Franklin Sinanan, Patrick De Castro and George Le Bar. The exhibition is composed of paintings that experiment with the color black as a hue and use images commonly associated with the Black experience. The exhibition will be running through February 28 on the fourth floor Public Gallery at Miami Beach City Hall. For more information check out www.artcentersf.org or call 305-674-8278.

If you prefer the Miami Design District for your regular dose of art, then the Diaspora Vibe Gallery in conjunction with the Barbados Investment and Development Corporation is hosting “Three Generations: Barbadian Contemporary Art.” This exhibition will focus on three generations of artists living and working in Barbados and showcase a diverse group of 10 juried artists working with an equally diverse range of materials, processes and ideas. Several special events will accompany the public viewing, including a gallery walk, artist talk and slide presentations. “Three Generations” will be on display from February 9 to March 31. To find out more about this event, call the Diaspora Vibe Gallery at 305-573-4046.

For all the art lovers in Homestead, ArtSouth is presenting “From Cameroon With Love” a guest exhibition of artists from Cameroon in the CCRC Gallery. The artists in this exhibit are members of the newly-formed Bonapriso Center for the Arts in Douala, Cameroon and will feature 17 paintings from Mboko Lagriffe, Hako Hankson and Koko Komegne. This is a rare opportunity to see art from the other side of the world in your own backyard. The opening reception takes place February 11, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

ArtSouth, along with Miami Dade College, is also presenting “Diversity”, featuring a wide range of works from ArtSouth resident artists using materials such as wood sculpture, oils, acrylic, stone, watercolor, mixed media and clay. This exhibit begins on February 22. Check www.artsouthhomestead.org or call 305-247-9406 for more details.
