Red Bull: The Art of Can Exhibition
March 3-14 | Ocean and 9th, Miami Beach
by James Cubby on March 08, 2010
Red Bull has erected a pop-up gallery for their The Art of Can Exhibition on Ocean Drive. The exhibition consists of 42 pieces all inspired from the red, blue and silver Red Bull can.
Some of the art was quite creative and while most of the artists created elaborate and beautifully executed pieces of art one artist merely crushed the Red Bull can a bit and called it art. South Beach diva Elaine Lancaster hosted the reception and was followed into the gallery by a parade of dancing girls and boys with drums just like a carnaval caravan. The room was filled with Red Bull executives, VIPs and the artists that had created the art. The event was catered and delicious food tastings were passed, like miniature chicken quesadillas and giant shrimp.
The designer Mychael Knight from Project Runway was on hand as he had designed a series of dresses (all accessorized with Red Bull cans in some way). It was a brilliant marketing campaign for Red Bull who had flown in artists from around the U.S. for the event. Out front was a fleet of Red Bull cars all with a giant can of Red Bull on top.
If you're in South Beach, stop by the pop-up gallery in Lummus Park to see the exhibition. It's worth the trip and you might even get wings.

Cool Nights, Hot Jazz at the Bass
by Manny Meland on March 07, 2010
The Bass Museum was packed once again as they presented the Fernando Ullibarri Quartet on Friday, March 4th. This was one of their Cool Nights, Hot Jazz series. The Quartet consisted of Jim Gasior on keyboard, Fernando Ullibarri on accoustic guitar, Jim Allen on bass and John Yarling on drums. Much of the music we heard that evening was composed by Fernando. The next band in the series, the Rudolfo Zuniga Quintet will perform on March 19th. I want to hip you to the fact that he is HOT. Shelly Berg with special guest Ed Calle will play April 2nd and the series winds up on April 16th with the Negroni Trio. Reserve early at the Bass Museum of Art, 2121 Park Ave., Miami Beach. 305.673.7530 – www.bassmuseum.org.

The Bass Museum of Art
A Great Destination in Miami Beach
by Manny Meland on February 25, 2010
The Bass Museum of Art is a cultural and entertainment destination too often overlooked by many in the neighborhood. The Bass’ lecture series on Topics in Art History takes place every Tuesday from Jan.26 through March 16.
Their exciting art shows are well chosen and very interesting. And if you are part of the Art Crowd, you’ve enjoyed the excursions to various artists’ studios on the beach and across the Bay.
My favorite is their Cool Nights and Hot Jazz series. It started on Friday night (February 19) and featured Mike Orta, a finalist in the prestigious Great American Jazz Piano Competition.
We were seated at a table, in an intimate cabaret style sipping some treats which included wine and soda. This evening, Mike was accompanied by his brother Nicki on bass, Gary Campbell on sax and Rudolfo Zuniga on drums, They rocked the room.
The jazz series continues every other Friday. Fernando Ulibarri Quartet will be featured on March 5. Rudolfo Zuniga Quintet will play on March 19. Then on April 2, see Shelly Berg with special guest Ed Calle. Finally, on April 16, the Negroni Trio will end the series.
Attention jazz aficionados! Can you believe this lineup? I suggest you make reservations right away as the room has very limited seating.
The Bass Museum of Art continues their famed winter jazz series on Fridays, from 7-9 p.m. through April 16. Bass Museum of Art, 2121 Park Ave., Miami Beach. Call 305.673.7530 or visit www.bassmuseum.org.

On Saturday, February 13, the New World Symphony presented VIVACE: Great Loves of the Silver Screen, a glittering fundraising affair that combined elegance and classic films with music. The evening began with a one-of-a-kind concert at the beautiful Olympia Theatre at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts that mixed classic scenes from Hollywood’s Golden Age together with live orchestral accompaniment by the New World Symphony. Through a Curtain Darkly
by Manny Meland on February 10, 2010
On Feb. 3rd, Ana Mendez presented, a program of dance at the Center for Visual Communications in Miami. It marked the anniversary of the death by suicide of the choreographer Joe Meek. The company consisted of Alex Puentes, Federico Nessi, Liony Garcia, Ricardo Guerrero, Rick Diaz and Sleeper.
On stage, two arms appeared to reach from beyond the pale. Then, through a willowy curtain that seamed to divide this world from beyond, six black suited zombie like dancers appeared. They shuffled to occupy the stage with their spastic, convulsive movements. They did that to sounds that either emanated from the cosmos or from friction of heavy metal.
As a counterpoint, a ghostly lady in white appeared on stage. The dark dancers, whose limbs crumbled and straightened as they moved, soon smothered her. Then, all were sucked back to that other place.
The packed audience in the room sat for the half hour program either in rapt attention or stunned silence. The applause that followed was enthusiastic.
