The 10th Edition of Art Basel Miami Beach

By: James Cubby on .

Art Basel Miami Beach

Art Basel Miami Beach will once again transform Miami into the art Mecca of the world for almost a week. It’s hard to believe that this will be the 10th edition of Art Basel Miami Beach. Every year Art Basel seems to grow bigger and bigger, taking over a new section of Miami and adding more events and parties. While the schedule of art events, exhibitions, parties, lectures, and performances are too numerous for one person to attend, most will try, rushing to as many events as possible. Some people attend only art events while others just take advantage of the many parties. If you try to do both, you’ll go crazy and I must admit, I’m already a little overwhelmed by Art Basel and it hasn’t even started...

Art Basel, A Survivors Guide: Things (I think) You Need to Know

By: Irene Sperber on .

Air de Paris | Allen Ruppersberg | Wally Hedrick | 2006

Before we drown in a pool of cultural delirium, let’s review a few basics that may not be squashed on the center lane of the information highway.

The ability to retain swathes of visual information may not be a problem to the ram-crammed of the newly minted brain...but, trust me, as the years pile up on you...there may be a certain amount of garnered info that inexplicably disappears from that personal hard drive resting somewhere over your eyebrows. Luckily it’s 2011 and virtual memory can be quickly borrowed from the gaggle of aids available to the over-stretched gray matter.

He was invited to stage the 1996 DIFFA's Production of Collection Rouge for its Miami premier. Captiva

Hey, you guys, as they say in the table waiting trade, do you remember Zoetic Stage? Of course you do. They're the fine and talented ladies and gentlemen who brought you Michael McKeever's South Beach Babylon at the Arsht Center almost one year ago. So huzzah for that and huzzah again, because they're coming back to the Arsht with another captivating piece and it's called Captiva. And it's written by Christopher Demos-Brown (the hunky lawyer who won a Carbonell Award for his When The Sun Shone Brighter).

If you're any sort of Floridian you'll know that Captiva is an island off the West Coast that besides being upscale (God, how I...

The Addams Family

The Addams Family at the Arsht Center

The Addams Family, the satirical cartoon created by Charles Addams that first appeared in the The New Yorker in 1938, has been transformed into a devilish delightful musical of the same name. Some may not be familiar with the cartoon but there was also a television series, two animated series and a string of films bearing the name The Addams Family. The characters, Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester, Lurch, Grandmama, Wednesday, Pugsley, and The Thing, have become iconic and known for their eccentric and bizarre behavior. What could be a more fitting time to meet the characters of The Addams Family than the week before Halloween? Now on tour across America...

If there's one thing I like better than a bacon fat sandwich on French bread, heavy on the salt and pepper, it's good theatre and I had a great big mouthful of that last season. And what about this coming year's offerings? Will they be as good? I've got a feeling they'll be even better, especially if Mosaic's terrific opener, Side Effects, (just concluding its run) is any criterion of what's on the way. But first, let me strain the absurd metaphors just a touch more with a roll call of the juiciest few shows that knocked even hog lard off my menu. They're listed alphabetically...

RAIN - A Tribute to The Beatles - Photo by: Cylla von Tiedemann

There will never be another musical group like The Beatles. Since most of us never had the opportunity to see The Beatles perform live, the show RAIN is the next best thing. Actually, RAIN is more than a concert of Beatles songs; it’s a tribute to an era. RAIN is a multi-media, multi-dimensional experience that was created by Mark Lewis. He’s gathered a group of talented musicians that not only sound and play like The Beatles, but look like them as well. RAIN serves up a delicious buffet of the music of The Beatles, from Ed Sullivan to Abbey Road. Mark Lewis was 12 years old when he first saw The Beatles perform on The Ed Sullivan...

2011 Poster for Miami Book Fair International

“A good book has no ending.” ~R.D. Cumming

I recently caught up with Books & Books owner/founder Mitchell Kaplan, the purveyor of goods for the mind of Miami’s literary population for the past three decades. A Miami Beach native son, Mr. Kaplan is also co-founder of the Miami Book Fair International, soon to launch its 28th season November 13 - 20. This man has added many points to our collective IQ over the years as Miami has catapulted from cultural backwater to an explosive leader in South Florida’s cultural quilt.

A Watery Oasis on the Edge of the Design District

William Philip Ross Munro’s watery themed artwork

Edge has several definitions in the dictionary. Seventeen in my dictionary including explanations such as: an improved position: advantage, impatient: eager, to put on the edge or to sharpen: on the brink…etc.

My e-vite read: SPACE 4004, A Showroom, Gallery, Photography, Film Screening and Event Location, invite you to an ideally suited space for art. This immense gallery is located on the edge of the Design District in Miami. Walk through the non-pretentious small front doors and be prepared to discover an oasis of prolific works created by a man of many names. Artist William Philip Ross Munro’s passion for all things edgy and artistic is omni-present in this 4000 square feet...

Beach Doctor Anne

By: Anna Collins on .

Beach Doctor Anne

Anne Gardner, M.D., sat in her Miami Beach office and looked out her window at Collins Avenue and the ocean. The office was modest, but the rent sure wasn’t. You pay for trendy, she rationalized, and of course being on South Beach was, well, being on South Beach.

It had been a year since Anne had moved her psychiatric practice from Manhattan to Miami. Building a clientele had been slow but steady. Luckily for her, most of the people in the area needed psychiatric counseling – substance abusers were rampant, most of the artists and performers in the area suffered from some sort of neurosis or phobia, and whoever wasn’t on antidepressants...
