Jacklyn Laflamme

Jacklyn Laflamme

Name: Jacklyn Laflamme

City: Miami, Florida

Birthplace: Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Artistic Medium: Acrylic paint on canvas

How did you get started?
I have always painted my whole life. It is a great passion of mine.  I took a huge leap of faith six years ago when I decided to quit my full-time job designing corporate jets to paint full-time.
I started off by making a run of prints of a popular painting. I launched into marketing and selling the images, and people began to take notice.  I opened a small gallery in Savannah, Georgia so that I would have a venue to feature my work. I would paint on the premise creating a lot of interest in the process.  I started to sell original paintings and have never looked back. I have since moved to Miami and I am painting and creating everyday.

Who or what are your influences?
I have a degree in creative arts and interior design.  I have had some wonderful educators guide me;  I have also had the opportunity to travel and encounter different cultures and experience their art.  I think the most important influence is an understanding of contemporary art and ancient history and how it all connects together.

What inspires your work?
My imagination inspires my work.  I can look at everyday scenes, objects or animals and say I will paint them as they are, but my imagination prevails, it is always responsible for the finished product.

How does Miami/South Florida influence your work?
The colors of Miami are amazing.  I have always been obsessed with color and I think that Miami is completely open to the brightest, hippest contemporary art.  Miami has a sense of design, a handle on fashion and is very forward in its thinking, it is a cool lifestyle and everything goes.  The biggest influence is that my colors are accepted and I am inspired to paint bigger and brighter and better.

How would you describe your work?
I let my imagination dictate as I manipulate paint to form layers of color and texture, which translates to line and shape, then I mix all this together in order to communicate a story.
My work is very whimsical, with an eclectic edge.  It can be interpreted on many different levels. Some messages are recognizable others lay deeply hidden, intrigue for the viewers imagination to unlock.

What has been the most unusual reaction to your work from the public?
The most unusual reaction I have had, is when I showed my entire portfolio to an amazing artist that I have looked up to for many years, and finally had the opportunity to meet.  He spent some time looking over all my work and studying the details. When he was done he exclaimed, ‘Wow! I feel like I have been on vacation for the past two hours, your work has blown me away, it is amazing and I love it.’ I was so inspired!

What would you like to achieve as an artist?
As an artist I would like to strive for success.  As for the definition of success—to be happy. I am happiest when I am creating, and when people are appreciating my work.  I want to be able to keep selling every painting I create—for with each sale it affords me the luxury to do the next one. All of them make me and others smile.
