The Enduring Appeal of The Nutcracker
Miami City Ballet Presents Holiday Classic

By Mary Damiano

Miami City Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker

When the Miami City Ballet performs its annual production of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker this month, it will wow audiences young and old, dance lovers and those who may never attend a ballet outside of this production.

What started in Russia more than a hundred years ago has evolved and endured, becoming one of the best-loved and most performed ballets in history.  The Nutcracker has become a symbol of the holiday season, with music that is familiar even to those who have never seen the ballet performed. Music from The Nutcracker was used in Disney’s 1940 animated masterpiece Fantasia.  The ballet about a little girl’s unusual Christmas present and the dreams that it inspires has been re-imagined as musical comedy and as satire in various versions.  A few years ago the Miami Gay Men’s Chorus even used the second act of their holiday concert to present a comical drag version of The Nutcracker.

Giving the Gift of the Arts
Thoughtful Ideas for Arts Lovers on Your List

Miami Beach Memories

South Florida writer Joann Biondi’s book about Miami’s colorful past is a great idea for a holiday gift

Although it was probably 10 years ago, I still remember a very special Christmas gift.  There, among the candy and novelties in my Tweety Bird stocking, were tickets to see Showboat and Big at Broward Center and Rent at the Jackie Gleason Theatre.

The giver was my husband and it was undeniably one of the most thoughtful gifts he could have come up with.  The guy definitely knows how to stuff a stocking. This was back in the days before I covered the arts, when going to the theatre was an indulgence, not a way of life.

The returns on those gifts were innumerable.  I still remember not only the excitement of getting them that Christmas morning, but I remember what came after.  I remember sitting in my fourth row seat and experiencing Rent for the very first time.  I remember being wowed by the entire productions of Showboat and Big, the magic of seeing movies I loved brought to life on stage, and singing the songs as I left the theatre.  Years later, those tickets are the only gift I remember from that Christmas.
