Ben Sivells

Ben Sivells

Name:  Ben Sivells

City:  Coconut Grove

Birthplace:  Norfolk, Virginia

Artistic Medium:  Shell Collages/Mosaics

How did you get started?
In the winter of 1980, I was in Cape Hatteras walking the beach with a friend.  We started to collect shells and I soon realized these were the most beautiful shells I have ever seen.  I was so attracted to the colors in the shells; I was inspired to create my first seashell collage.  I have been collecting shells and creating shell collages/mosaics ever since.

Who or what are your influences?
All people influence my work.  Every time I create a piece, it is an exciting challenge to see how everyone will respond to my creativity.  Just to see the faces react to my work is a significant influence on future work.

What inspires your work?
The greater power than I know of myself inspires me.

How does Miami/South Florida influence your work?
The tropical atmosphere in South Florida is magical and encourages/inspires my creativity.  Just enjoying this beautiful environment and being near the ocean is an influence on my work.

How would you describe your work?
My work is original one-of-a-kind shell collages/mosaics.

What has been the most unusual reaction to your work from the public?
In all of my 27 years of creating shell collages, the most common reaction has always been “Wow.”  Yet, I did have one individual who told me they did not like my work because shells were bad luck.

What would you like to achieve as an artist?
I would like to be recognized around the world for my artistic creativity and contributions.
