Call for Writers

PlayFest Seeks Full-Length Plays
The Harriett Lake Festival of New Plays, is seeking submissions for PlayFest 2008.  Each year we select around 10 new plays to be presented as readings.   Two or three of those plays will go on to be developed in workshops during the Harriett Lake Festival of New Plays.  Playwrights will receive a stipend and travel and housing expenses.  Some plays go on to be fully produced as part of a subsequent Orlando-UCF Shakespeare Festival season.

Guidelines:
PlayFest is seeking new full-length plays based on or inspired by works of classic literature or historic events.  We prefer plays that require six actors or less, and have a particular interest in one-person shows.  However, even in the case of one-person shows, we are not looking for history lectures, or museum piece adaptations that are faithful to a fault, but rather dynamic new theatrical versions of classic stories that speak to the contemporary mindset.

In order to qualify for PlayFest a play must not have received more than two professional AEA productions, not have received a Broadway of off-Broadway production, not have received Orlando production in current form, and not be published for general distribution.

We are also seeking musical  adaptations.  We will be a little less strict about the cast size, but are only interested in musicals based on or inspired by works of classic literature or historic events.

Submission Guidelines
(Do not try to circumvent these guidelines.  Do not send full scripts until instructed to do so.)

Submissions should include a bio/resume, a one page synopsis, five pages of sample dialogue, a character breakdown, and an e-mail address.  Please do not send full scripts.  Mail submissions to: Patrick Flick, Director of New Play Development, The Harriett Lake Festival of New Plays – PlayFest, Orlando Shakespeare Theater, 812 East Rollins St. Suite 100, Orlando, FL 32803

Initial submission deadline for  the 2008 PlayFest is June 31, 2007.  Playwrights will be notified via e-mail no later than October 31, 2007 as to whether or not they are to send the full script.

Guidelines:

Stories should be 3,000 words or less

Stories must be sent as an rtf (rich text format) attachment in 12pt. Times New Roman, double-spaced, with one inch margins and the words "Fiction Submission" in the subject line

Arts Writers Wanted
Writers needed for MiamiARTzine.com.  We need writers who are interested in covering the Miami/South Florida arts scene. We're eager to cover people and events that don't get as much coverage as well as the big splashy arts events. This is a perfect opportunity for journalism students and up and coming writers to increase their portfolios, get experience, have their work be seen and make contacts. We need people who can write with some flair, who are punctual, who communicate with their editor, who answer e-mails promptly, and who can turn around a story in 7-10 days. The ability to take and transmit digital photos is a plus. Writers should have a working knowledge of the arts and be comfortable with interviews. Writers are always encouraged to pitch stories that would fit the target and mission of the e-zine. Please, please, please: Only reply if you're serious about your work. We don’t have time to deal with writers who wouldn't know a deadline if it bit them and who don't contact their editor when a story falls through. We’re only interested in working with writers who understand and practice professionalism. As the e-zine is produced by a non-profit organization, compensation will be in experience, clips and perks, including press credentials and entry into events. If you are interested and meet the above criteria, please reply with a brief e-mail about your background, your contact info, resume and a few samples of your writing. E-mail StarrWriter2000@aol.com.
