How did you get started?
My maternal grandmother was an extremely gifted, self-taught artist and
philanthropist. I was exposed to the arts and my own creative talents through
her enthusiasm, encouragement, and support.
Who or what are your influences?
Truth in meaning and construction. I have been blessed with a skill set
that allows me the freedom to express myself in a variety of media. I believe
that the materials chosen to execute a particular idea should be the most
appropriate to advance my artistic message.
I follow the artistic/design philosophy of “Form follows
function” with simplicity in design, execution and essence.
What inspires your work?
Everyday life as it unfolds before me. The natural world and the social
confines dictated by society – how these two great forces interact, sometimes
united, but often times opposed.
How does Miami/South Florida influence your work?
As a second generation, native Floridian, I embrace and thrive on the
cultural and ethnic sophistication and diversity of South Florida. Nature wise,
our tropical climate, light, vegetation, and abundance of water, are all
reflected in my work.
How would you describe your work?
In my photography, I aspire to reveal the essence of my subject through a
particular moment captured in time. In my mixed media sculpture, I tend to
explore society’s views on love, politics, and religion as they exist today and
the possibility of what they could become.
What has been the most unusual reaction to your work
from the public?
When shown my intricate pen and ink drawings of tropical streetscapes, an
elderly Cuban woman cried and told me of how it brought up memories of her
childhood in Cuba and the Spanish art of pen and ink drawings called Plumilla.
What would you like to achieve as an artist?
To add a positive note in the musical score that is life, and to inspire a
symphony of hope in others.
