What do the Beach Boys led by Mike Love and his fashion designer wife Jacqueline Love have in common? On Tuesday, July 19, they each did their thing poolside at the Raleigh Hotel on Collins Avenue in Miami Beach for the IMG Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Miami Swim.

It was one of those magical July days when the Beach Boys songs floated on Atlantic breezes across the pool deck. The mojitas that the circulating waitresses dispensed just added a glow to the beauty and elegance of this pageant.

IMG, the producer of Mercedes- Benz Swim Miami at the Raleigh, is a global leader in event creation, management and talent representation. IMG was founded in 1960 by Mark McCormack and golf legend Arnold Palmer.

This afternoon, their opening runway show “Kokomo” was presented by Jacqueline Love, who designs for Bella Mar Swim and E Label. A bevy of beautiful models strutted their stuff around the pool catwalk. Their striking jewelry and accessories enhanced their outfits. Love’s eco-inspired swimsuit collection meshed eco-conscious fabrics with high style. The art deco Raleigh Hotel was the perfect backdrop for a collection of this caliber. Later we saw collections by designers Rosa Cha, Badgly Mischka and Cia Martima, among others. Even Hollywood celebrity Jessica Simpson made her debut as a swimwear designer. Her slender models paraded her swimsuit creations for us.

And what’s a parade without a band? A cool band. On this summer evening, the music was by Beach Boys.  What better way to revel poolside in the sun and fun of the beach?

Following the untimely passing of Carl Wilson, one of the original Beach Boys, the surviving members of the band, Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Alan Jardine and Bruce Johnson agreed to split up. They add musicians to their groups for tours. John Stamos joined Mike Love and the band for this tour. Stamos is an Emmy-nominated actor best known for his character role as Uncle Jesse Katsopolis on the TV show “Full House.” He currently plays Tony Gates on ER.  Besides being the drummer and vocalist with the Beach Boys, his music career includes his appearance on Broadway as the master of ceremonies in Cabaret and in Nine and in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. This evening, the models strutted and we grooved to “Sloop John B”, “Catch a Wave,” “Why Do Fools Fall in Love,” “Surf’s Up,” and “All Summer Long.” Their sound was as good as ever and they enthusiastically played their timeless tunes into the night.

We filled our gift bags with a complimentary CD of the Best of the Beach Boys, as well as a batch of cellulite cream, anti-wrinkle face cream, hair care products, a beach sarong, beach thongs, etc. from booths that were set up at poolside.

To paraphrase another 1960’s group, the event epitomized ‘Florida dreaming on such a summer’s day.’
