Artist Spotlight

Cesar Garcia

Cesar Garcia

Name:  Cesar Garcia

City:  Miami

Birthplace:  Havana, Cuba

Artistic Medium:  Mixed media, acrylic, oil, ink on canvas, paper, ceramic, and wood.

How did you get started?
I guess I was born into it. I had the privilege to live with my uncle, a prominent Cuban artist, in the early part of my life. His studio was my playground. I was around his world until the age of eight, when I left Cuba and moved to Miami. But by then, the seed was planted. Ever since I can remember I been I have been creating art.

Who or what are your influences?
I am influenced by various things, and of course the old masters from the Renaissance to the Modern period. Just about all the famous masters have left an impression on me at some point in my life. There is also a very special place in me that I am greatly influenced by my uncle, who was my mentor.

What inspires your work?
My work is inspired by the mystery of this world, all the unknowns, and feelings of the past, the present, and the future. My heritage, my upbringing, and moments in my life have left a permanent image in my mind. Music, like Led Zeppelin, castles, bridges, aircrafts, aliens, chess pieces, and other mystical powers are symbolized in my iconographic language. Some I know exactly where they come from; others I do not.

How does Miami/South Florida influence your work?
It’s a privilege to live in South Florida and I am influenced by the art scene here. I think we all know something special is happening and I am honored to live and work in this environment.

How would you describe your work?
In one word, I would say it’s contemporary. Of course many styles come into play, but mainly surrealistic qualities.

What has been the most unusual reaction to your work from the public?
I have received many unusual reactions about my work, mostly based on ignorance in regards to contemporary art. Many people have asked why I don’t put stretchers on some of my work, or why my color scheme is monochromatic.

What would you like to achieve as an artist?
Well, the career as an artist is an endless search, so I would like to attain the highest level of growth possible.

Upcoming Shows:
October 13 – November 4: the Ellen Charapko Gallery, 2374 Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors. ellencharapkogallery.com

Where is your work available?
You may find my work in South Florida at Ellen Charapko Gallery and also at Colby Gallery in Chicago
