Fall Back, Culture Forward
Turn Back the Clock and Stay Up for Sleepless Night in Miami Beach

By Leslie Pariseau

Natasha Tsakos

Natasha Tsakos will perform her character, Zero, in “I Dream: Caution: Humans Sleeping” scheduled for 4 a.m. in the Ocean Drive Zone during the Sleepness Night event

Miami Beach is often perceived as one perpetual nightclub/beach party —a playground for the constant buzz of partygoers, beautiful people and their entourages. Unless it’s Art Basel, the Beach is not typically considered a destination for those in pursuit of culture.

However, the locals of this little sandbar realize there is more to South Beach’s arts scene than meets the glitz-seeking tourist’s eye; we are graced with world-class (and off-the-beaten-path) institutions such as the Wolfsonian, the Art Center, Miami Beach Cinematheque, and the Miami City Ballet, in addition to hosting highly-anticipated year-round cultural festivals.

But on November 3, out-of-towners and residents alike can enjoy the hustle and bustle of  SoBe’s nightlife, as well as its verdant and dynamic arts scene. Set back your clocks: this shindig is for the culture-seekers, the shiny celebrity followers, the beach bashers and the local insomniacs to hang out together on one Sleepless Night. . .

Miami Beach Mayoral Candidates Answer Questions About the Arts

Compiled by Tony Guzman

You Are Here, by artist Lina Eichenwald

You Are Here, by artist Lina Eichenwald. Created for a city-wide public art project, the Flamingo was sponsored by Miami Beach Visitor & Convention Authority. It now resides in the lobby of the Miami Beach City Hall, the seat of the city government.

As a service to MiamiARTzine.com readers who are eligible to vote in the upcoming Miami Beach mayoral election, Miami Beach Arts Trust asked the four mayoral candidates to answer some arts-related questions we submitted to them. Below are the answers provided by candidates Matti Herrera Bower, Simon Cruz, and William “Bill” Charles Smatt. Candidate Raphael Herman did not respond by deadline.

Our thanks to Carol Hoffman-Guzman, executive director of Arts at St. John's; Hannah Baumgarten, artistic director of  Dance Now! Ensemble; and Jeremy T. Chestler, executive director of ArtCenter/South Florida for providing us with their timely and pertinent questions for the candidates.

How do you feel about non-Miami Beach arts organizations being given large grants by the City of Miami Beach?   ---Carol Hoffman-Guzman Executive Director, Arts at St. John's
