Hot Shot

Jon Hendricks, known as the Father of Vocalese, and Kevin Mahoghany, a Miami-based jazz singer, are pictured at the Knight Concert Hall on January 15, when Hendricks performed on a double bill with the Manhattan Transfer, part of the Jazz Roots Series. The 88-year-old Hendricks is still going strong, leaving the audience in awe of his finely honed talent. Compared to Hendricks, Mahoghany is relatively new to the jazz game—his recording career dates back to the early 1990s. The two of them, and the many jazz fans that pack the house for the Jazz Roots Series, are proof of the enduring power, as well as the past, present and future of that American original we call Jazz.
