Get out your diamonds. The grand dame of Lincoln Road, the landmark Colony Theatre, is turning 75 this month, and the City of Miami Beach is celebrating the theatre’s diamond jubilee with a blow-out bash.

Hosted by Ileana Bravo, Chair of the Cultural Arts Council; Jorge Gonzalez, City Manager; and Matti Herrera Bower, Mayor of Miami Beach, the event, which takes place Monday, January 25, will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Colony’s opening night, its history, its current place in the performing arts community, and its multiple award-winning restoration.

The Art Deco-style Colony Theater, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, first opened in 1934 as part of Paramount Pictures' movie theater chain. The theatre served as a primary entertainment location for many of the 500,000 U.S. troops who trained in Miami Beach between 1942 and 1945. In 1960, the Colony’s original entrance was moved to the Lenox Avenue corner when Lincoln Road was closed to traffic to become the pedestrian mall designed by Morris Lapidus.
