Miami Artist Rubem Robierb: Poet, Painter

Painting Exhibit at ICON South Beach During Basel

Heber Siqueiros

Rubem Robierb was born in Maranhão, Brazil in 1976, which is also the cradle of many Brazilian poets. Ever since a very young age, he clued into a passion for poetry and felt artistically inclined towards photography. The artist says that when he holds a camera and begins to shoot, his work is “all about poetry translated into images.”

At the age of 20, Robierb moved to São Paulo, Brazil with the dream to become a professional photographer and began working shooting commercial photography for fashion magazines.Soon enough his talent was meant to break into a different type of market and within a few months of moving to Brazil’s capital, his work became the spotlight within the emerging art scene, his controversial images became popular and got him the notice of important art curators as he became word-to-mouth among galleries.

The Art et Partage Association in Aix en Provence, France, commissioned his first solo show, Brezil Autrement, (Brazil Otherwise) and published a book of his works.

Later on, prestigious art galleries in Sao Paulo, Zurich, Paris and Milan showed Robierb’s work. Some of them gave the artist solo exhibits, including his series Visages Metis and African Beauty. In Monaco, he participated in the Art Curial Monaco for Fight Aids Foundation.

A few years later, Robierb decided to move to Miami to continue developing his artistic career not only as a photographer but also as a painter and visual artist. He now lives within Atlanta and Miami and is happily married to Weather Channel’s TV anchor Sam Champion.

For the past three years Rubem Robierb has presented solo shows Eros Thanatos, Show Me the Money and Bullet-fly Effect during Art Basel week. Last year the SBE group, home of the SLS Hotel, kicked-off its artist series at Katsuya giving Robierb a very successful solo show where he got much attention for his politically controversial, yet beautiful images of butterflies. This year, the artist is exploring his talents in painting. “HEART” and “F-LIGHT” are the titles of his latest work and they will be unveiled as part of the stunning Philippe Starck-designed building ICON South Beach's annual Art Basel exhibition. The artist has also invited friend artists Marcos Marin and Ramon Aular to show a few pieces with him.

“You can like or dislike my art,”says the artist, “but you will never walk out without some emotional reaction or thought about what you saw, and this is exactly what my goal is. I stopped writing poetry and became a visual artist. Images can 'say' things that words simply cannot.”
