Tel Aviv on Fire

Sunday, Aug 25, 2019 various times - English

One of the most irreverent cinematic spins on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, the latest from writer-director Sameh Zoabi follows a fledgling soap-opera scenarist (Kais Nashif) tasked with concocting plot twists to suit riveted viewers on both sides. Zoabi’s ingenious satire exudes a deadpan audacity that’s impossible to resist, while Nashef’s outwardly unflappable middleman grounds this battle of ideologies in irresistible comic pragmatism. Tel Aviv on Fire won’t bring peace to the Middle East, but having everyone laughing together is a step in the right direction.

The Return of Martin Guerre

Sunday, Aug 25, 2019 at 1:00 PM - English

In the 16th century, Martin Guerre (Gérard Depardieu) returns home to his village after seven years away at war, demonstrating far more wisdom than both the locals and wife (Nathalie Baye) remember him as having. Has he changed, or is he an impostor? A real-life story in French history, it had been turned into a book, play and opera before director Daniel Vigne enlisted the great Jean-Claude Carrière to write this adaptation. The film went on to spawn Somersby and a West End musical, and won Best Foreign Film from the National Board of Review and Depardieu Best Actor from the National Society of Film Critics.

Clemenza & Tessio Are Dead

Sunday, Aug 25, 2019 various times - English

Peter Clemenza and Salvatore Tessio are two longtime foot soldiers of the Corleone crime family, but after more than 40 years of service, upper management changes in the organization and a perceived lack of respect from the incoming generation leads them to wonder if they're being put out to pasture (or under it). But with the handwriting already on the wall, is it possible to change what fate has already decreed? Well, yes; but only if someone is cunning enough to radically change the script.

An unauthorized parody of The Godfather (1972), screenplay by Mario Puzo and Francis Ford Coppola, based on the novel by Mario Puzo, CLEMENZA & TESSIO ARE DEAD takes a look at two little-noticed cogs in the Mafia machine and shows how those wise guys who are often overlooked can actually have the most fascinating stories of all.

Tickets: $20.00 – $35.00

Hew Locke: For Those in Peril on the Sea

Sunday, Aug 25, 2019 various times - English

This exhibition presents the second iteration of For Those in Peril on the Sea (2011), an installation by Hew Locke (b. 1959, Edinburgh; lives in London) first shown in 2013 during PAMM's inaugural programming. Consisting of dozens of scaled-down replicas of ships suspended from the ceiling, the installation creates the impression of a massive exodus taking place throughout the architectural space above the viewer. It features a broad range of vessel types, from cigarette boats, catamarans, and cruise liners to ragged fishing skiffs and timeworn cargo ships. In light of Miami's history as the site for numerous waves of immigration particularly from the Caribbean, and specifically by sea For Those in Peril on the Sea will have a particular resonance for the Museum's audiences. With its significant links to the South Florida community, this installation, part of Pérez Art Museum Miami's permanent collection, promises a powerful experience for visitors.

All That Is Solid

Sunday, Aug 25, 2019 from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM - English

When considering the idea of form and function, a conversation arises between objects that exist as façade-inaccessible metonymic references to that which is concrete. ALL THAT IS SOLID exploits this concept to examine both social and economic development and the implications on urban growth as it relates to Miami's creative ecology.

Coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus movement, ALL THAT IS SOLID pays homage to this brief yet defining moment in history that succeeded in pollinating disparate relationships between design, architecture, and performance. The exhibition highlights artists who converge at the intersection of form, function, material, and action.

ALL THAT IS SOLID is presented by MDDA and co-organized by Miami collaborative groups Ground Control and Placeholder, collectively known as GCP.
