Good Time

Saturday, Aug 17, 2019 at 11:30 PM - English

Following the mind-bending Heaven Knows What, celebrated filmmakers Josh and Benny Safdie return to the mean streets of New York City with Good Time, a hypnotic crime thriller that explores with bracing immediacy the tragic sway of family and fate. After a botched bank robbery lands his younger brother in prison, Constantine "Connie" Nikas (Robert Pattinson) embarks on a twisted odyssey through the city's underworld in an increasingly desperate - and dangerous - attempt to get his brother Nick (Benny Safdie) out of jail. Over the course of one adrenalized night, Connie finds himself on a mad descent into violence and mayhem as he races against the clock to save his brother and himself, knowing their lives hang in the balance. This sleeper indie hit from distributor A24, that features a pulse-pounding score by Oneohtrix Point Never, was originally released digitally and CGAC is proud to present the film on glorious 35mm for the first time in Miami, the format on which it was shot.

Hew Locke: For Those in Peril on the Sea

Saturday, Aug 17, 2019 various times - English

This exhibition presents the second iteration of For Those in Peril on the Sea (2011), an installation by Hew Locke (b. 1959, Edinburgh; lives in London) first shown in 2013 during PAMM's inaugural programming. Consisting of dozens of scaled-down replicas of ships suspended from the ceiling, the installation creates the impression of a massive exodus taking place throughout the architectural space above the viewer. It features a broad range of vessel types, from cigarette boats, catamarans, and cruise liners to ragged fishing skiffs and timeworn cargo ships. In light of Miami's history as the site for numerous waves of immigration particularly from the Caribbean, and specifically by sea For Those in Peril on the Sea will have a particular resonance for the Museum's audiences. With its significant links to the South Florida community, this installation, part of Pérez Art Museum Miami's permanent collection, promises a powerful experience for visitors.

All That Is Solid

Saturday, Aug 17, 2019 from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM - English

When considering the idea of form and function, a conversation arises between objects that exist as façade-inaccessible metonymic references to that which is concrete. ALL THAT IS SOLID exploits this concept to examine both social and economic development and the implications on urban growth as it relates to Miami's creative ecology.

Coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus movement, ALL THAT IS SOLID pays homage to this brief yet defining moment in history that succeeded in pollinating disparate relationships between design, architecture, and performance. The exhibition highlights artists who converge at the intersection of form, function, material, and action.

ALL THAT IS SOLID is presented by MDDA and co-organized by Miami collaborative groups Ground Control and Placeholder, collectively known as GCP.

Anna Gibson’s Bio:
Anna is predominantly self-taught in what she sees and the technical knowledge she has. She calls it a gift, but just does her work naturally and it turns out. Anna still loves learning new photography techniques. She loves to photograph locally and often heads to the beach long before others even think of waking. “The best shots of the sunrise, after all, start roughly an hour before the sun peeks over the horizon. I’ve gotten some of my best photos in the rain and the bitter cold and the sauna-caliber heat of a Florida day,” she said. When commissioned to do a particular piece you will find her in the same spot again and again, vying for the perfect lighting or perfect colors for what she envisions. “I wouldn’t quite call it an obsession, but some people might,” Anna said.

Sam Carfora’s Bio:
Sami has always felt drawn to capture moments, well before ever owning a camera. Her drive to tell as many stories as she can is what propelled her into the art form of photography. Each of her photos is backed by an internal need to seek out beauty, to put truth to pictures, and to convey raw emotion. The goal of her pieces is that the viewer will experience the same feeling she had while taking it; that in the cross-hairs of creativity and perfect timing, a connection between artist and audience will be formed. Sami feels that the ultimate compliment is to have her art displayed in someone’s home – to have been invited into their sacred space.
