Art Basel and the entire Miami Art Week will emerge in direct proportion to your refrigerator disgorging the last of the holiday turkey fixins. I have been slamming reams of Art Week info into an e-folder knowing full well that it will soon explode from my laptop, splattering events, dates and information in a jumbled pile of artfully knotted up facts (not fiction), giving me the thankless task of unraveling this mixed media bag into a cogent dissertation for you to digest. Yup, good luck with that, but here goes anyway.

Destruct, construct, instruct…

The Miami Beach Convention Center campus has been in a bit of an upgrade situation for the past umpty ump months, completion to be determined, but Art Basel 2017 will be housed in all four new halls (A,B,C and D) of the convention center, same location (all addresses, dates, links and visitor info located end of article). Expect upgraded meeting rooms with up-to-date technology hookups (oh, hallelujah).

Make sure to familiarize yourself with all Art Basel Miami Beach offerings before you miss the boat: Click on the link Miami Beach/The Show for comprehensive info on the six different gallery sections within Art Basel as well as Films, Magazines, a list of galleries, Conversations and Public Arts.

Miami Beach is Art Basel’s American exhibition with galleries covering North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa showing new stars of all stripes from painters, sculptors, installation artists, photography, film, and world renown editioned works, film and performance art at the convention center as well as Soundscape Park (400 17th St, Miami Beach, FL 33139) and Collins Park (2100 Collins Ave, Miami Beach, FL 33140).

Inform, perform, conform, reform…

The 14th annual Design/Miami tent will be located in the same location between Meridian and Convention Center Drive a mere one bunny hop west of Art Basel. Expect the usual stunning entries from top international creatives celebrating fine design. Design Miami entrance always causes a stir. For 2017 West 8 Landscape Architects utilized 101 wooden logs recycled from September’s Irma storm incorporating them into a temporary oval green space which will ultimately transform the current parking lot into a public park for our year-round use in the near future.

The Mwabindo Series will be furniture commissioned by Design Miami/ and designed by Christ & Gantenbein for The Mwabindo School in southern Zambia. "The 2017 Panerai Design Miami/ Visionary Award allows us to shine a light on an inspiring collaboration between Selldorf Architects, 14+ Foundation and Rashid Johnson to build Mwabwindo School in rural Zambia," said Rodman Primack, Chief Creative Officer of Design Miami. And do not miss the Design Talks held regularly throughout the Fair hours.

The twenty eighth annual Art Miami, Miami’s original art fair (concentrating on 20th and 21st century art), has changed location this year from Midtown Miami to One Herald Plaza, the old Miami Herald location. With it’s sister fair, CONTEXT housed in an adjacent tent, Art Miami has laid down 250,000 square feet of exhibition space in this new location. It claims to being one of the top ranked international art fairs for attendance in the U.S. and second most attended globally.

Sixteen of the adjunct art shows peppered around town are hidden (in plain sight) within my paragraph below. Links to all fair information can be accessed by clicking on the exhibition name.

My PULSE quickens as the AQUA water of Miami Beach laps onto the full SCOPE of this infamous sandy beach. A toned beach bum asks me in Spanish if I have any spare change. I answer, “NADA” and move swiftly on. He grabs off a runaway boogie board, tossing it into the waters edge and hopping on with perfect FORM. Putting all this open blue-green water and blue-on-blue sky in CONTEXT I must admit, it may be worth all the traffic and sleepless nights matched by early morning breakfasts INKed into my week long schedule and carefully taped to my FRIDgE lest I forget a soiree or two. As the afternoon wanes into a lapis lazuli evening, SATELLITEs twinkle above, melding with stars and airplanes and a UFO or two, the RED DOTs of myriad 747’s landing lights reflecting into the MIAMI RIVER from the full SPECTRUM of a glitz and glam landscape. The week runs from spectacular to SUPERFINE and beyond as PRIZMs from crystal champagne glasses refract decadently onto the faces of the art stage elite. A PINTA of warmed milk lounges on a bar serving Cuban coffee day and night to keep the cognoscenti on point.
