Sure there are snakes, crocodiles, and gosh knows what in the Everglades, but who would think that there are Model Ts, military vehicles, construction cranes, busses, automobiles, vans and airplanes left for dead in the Swamp?
Photographer Matt Stock and Charles J. Kropke, an Everglades explorer, who runs the company Dragonfly Expeditions, teamed up for one of the most interesting photo exhibits we've seen in these parts for a long time.
Through a decade of research, a series of photographs, and an installation of sorts, entitled "Abandoned Vehicles of the Everglades," explores the interaction between man and nature as seen through nighttime environmental portraits of vehicles long abandoned in the Everglades ecosystem.
By investigating rumors and analyzing satellite imagery, Stock and Kropke re-discovered dozens of these forgotten relics. There are vehicles representing every decade and wheel configuration since the motorized "horseless carriage."
The exhibit not only shows photographs, but also has a pair of old vehicles on displaye retrieved from the 'glades. And, within the confines of the historic Biltmore Hotel, the whole experience takes on a real Florida then atmosphere.
