Countdown to Kindness! Give Miami Day

Help Change the City in 24 Hours

Monica Torres

In twenty-four hours, a city can be changed, especially if kindness, generosity and community are involved -- that is the idea behind Give Miami Day.

On Give Miami Day, from midnight on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014 to midnight on Friday, Nov. Nov. 21, 2014, these attributes will definitely be observed.

Over five hundred local non-profits will receive support from philanthropic donors, who will be giving monetary gifts. And, it will all happen online at givemiamiday.org. This event is a huge deal. Last year, $3.2 million was given to over four hundred organizations, which used the funds to further advocate their causes. Some of the non-profits include Breakthrough Miami, which provides under-resourced children access to top schools, SAVE Foundation, which champions equality in Miami, and the Miami Science Museum, which inspires discovery.

The Miami Foundation, founded in 1967, presents programs throughout the year that help the community. Miami Leaders, Engaged Youth, and Miami Fellows are some of the programs this generous foundation provides to non-profit leaders, high school students, and others looking to opportunities to improve their communities.

Through the years, the foundation has matched donors with philanthropic ventures. Fund-holders have fostered the arts, awarded scholarships, championed diversity, taught kids to read, and provided food and shelter for the hungry and homeless.

Along the countdown to Give Miami Day, there will be a twitter party on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2014 at 11 p.m. @miamifoundation. There will also be a block party at Marlins Park on Thursday evening at 6 p.m. RSVP at https://miamifoundation.org/rsvp.

On Give Miami Day, both the Miami Foundation and the Knight Foundation will make a bonus gift for donations ranging from $25 to $10,000. The foundations hope to raise $5 million this year. And, many local non-profit arts organizations are participating.

The recently established Miami Arts Brigade will promote art-related enterprises like O, Miami and the Perez Art Museum for Give Miami Day.
