Miami Beach Celebrates Bygone Style

Art Deco Weekend Starts Friday

Art Deco is a style of visual art, design and architecture that originated in the Jazz Age and flourished until the 1940s. Angular, symmetrical geometric forms and vivid, contrasting pastel colors distinguish the elegant design. Remnants of the bygone style still linger in various parts of the world, and (our very own) Miami Beach has the largest collection of restored Art Deco hotels and apartment buildings— their pastel colors, rainbow-bright, overreaching bold shapes in doorways, windows, and balconies that shine under the constant sun.

In 1979, the Miami Beach Architectural District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This weekend, the historic district (spanning about thirty blocks) will be celebrated, and the music, fashion, art, and cars of the jazzy era will be brought back to life as Art Deco Weekend permeates the city.

Brought to you by the Miami Design Preservation League, the weekend-long festival, starting Friday, Jan. 16 and ending Sunday, Jan. 18, will include a bevy of events including live jazz, antique shows, walking tours, a dance-a-thon, costume shows, fashion shows, a dog parade, a classic car parade and film screenings.

Architecture is the most noted feature of Art Deco present in the sunny city; various guided tours of the Miami Beach Architectural Historic District will be available. Other relics like classic cars, now just adornments, parked in front of restaurants and hotels on Ocean Drive, as if waiting to pick-up a gangster from the past, will stride through the city in the Classic Car Parade.

Many other spirits from the past (liquid and air) will be brought back to life.

The Sobe Shirleys  — eight Shirley Temple impersonators — will roam the streets and cocktails, not like Shirley Temples I’m sure, will relax the visitors in the spirit of prohibition.

Be sure to check out some of the festivities (too many great ones to list) and support the historic district.
