Combine overhead projectors playing film with shadow puppets, live music and actors in silhouette. You have MANUAL CINEMA. The Chicago-based ensemble, presents Lula Del Ray, set in the mid-century American Southwest and inspired by the music of Hank Williams, Roy Orbison, and Patsy Cline. Lula del Ray is a mythic reinvention of the classic coming-of-age story. Told almost entirely without dialogue, Lula del Ray is the story of a lonely adolescent girl who lives with her mother on the outskirts of a vast satellite array in the middle of the desert. After a chance encounter over the radio, Lula becomes obsessed with a soulful country music duo, the Baden Brothers. Inspired by their music, she runs away from home and into a world of danger, deception, and disappointment.

An Evening of Kirtan with Jai Uttal at The Sacred Space Miami

Friday, Apr 28, 2017 from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM - English

Drawing from an unbroken tradition of Indian devotional singing, Jai Uttal will introduce and lead us in the ancient practice of "Kirtan" (or chanting), the heart of devotional yoga. This practice of calling to the divine creates a bridge between the individual and the eternal, opening the heart and welcoming the spirit. Sometimes soft and meditative and sometimes loud and wildly rhythmic, Kirtan takes the participant on a deep emotional and musical journey through our mostly unexplored inner world. With solo performance and call-and-response group chanting, Jai creates a space of invocation, prayer, and heartfelt expression. Jai has been leading Kirtans worldwide for over thirty years. "These ancient chants," writes Jai "contain a transformative power and healing energy. By singing these prayers we join a stream of consciousness and devotion that has been flowing for centuries."

No previous experience is needed. This is an exploration of the heart, independent of vocal or musical technique.

Jai Uttal, a Grammy nominated sacred music composer, recording artist, multi-instrumentalist, and ecstatic vocalist, combines influences from India with influences from American rock and jazz, creating a stimulating and exotic multi-cultural fusion that is truly world spirit music. Having traveled extensively in India, where he met many beautiful saints and singers, Bhakti yoga became his personal path. Jai has been leading kirtans around the world for more than 30 years, creating a safe environment for people to open their hearts and voices.

Celebration, meditation, dance of the devas, love song to the universe. Jai Uttal's new album Roots, Rock, Rama! (out March 3, 2017) is all of that and more. The whole world's myriad musical colors coruscate like a bejeweled shawl tossed from the shoulders of a goddess on this landmark two-CD recording. It manages to pack a lifetime's spiritual and musical quest into seventy-eight minutes of glorious music from an innovator whose work transcends any category or genre designation.

Childhood Memories from the Other Side of the Water

Friday, Apr 28, 2017 from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM - English

MDC Museum of Art + Design presents Childhood Memories from the Other Side of the Water, a visual autobiography depicting childhood experiences and recollections of Cuba by artist Eduardo del Valle consisting of a new series of thought-provoking photographs never exhibited before.

Independently over the past nine years, Eduardo del Valle has worked on a visual autobiography of his experiences and observations central to his childhood, his recollections of Cuba between 1951 to 1961, when he left the country of his birth at the age of ten, never to return. The photographic series Childhood Memories from the Other Side of the Water portrays certain aspects of the artists’ memories that have stayed with him, wedged deep at the far end of his recollection, aspects that have challenged del Valle forever in an unfading fashion. The project culminated into 88 autobiographical photographs, recreating memories shot entirely outside of the island.

The Exile Experience: A Journey to Freedom

Friday, Apr 28, 2017 from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM - English

The Exile Experience: Journey to Freedom is a pictorial account of the struggles that the Cuban exile community has endured since Fidel Castro's rise to power, and the successes they have achieved in the United States. Having covered the Cuban exile community and its struggle for freedom extensively throughout the years, Miami Dade College and The Miami Herald Media Company now present this journalistic chronology, which showcases the spirit and accomplishments of the Cuban American community. The permanent exhibition is housed at the College’s National Historic Landmark Freedom Tower, itself central to the story of Cubans in the United States.

MDC’s Freedom Tower was operated by the U.S. Government as a reception center for Cuban refugees from 1962 to 1974. “The building is significant because it represents the important story of the Cuban exodus to America and resettlement during the Cold War,” reports the U.S. Department of the Interior, which has also called the Freedom Tower the “Ellis Island of the South.” Though it operated in that capacity for only 12 years, the building has become an icon representing the faith that democracy brought to troubled lives, the generosity of the American people and a hopeful beginning that assured thousands a new life in a new land.
