In the rural alpine hamlet of Mizubiki, not far from Tokyo, Takumi and his daughter, Hana, lead a modest life gathering water, wood, and wild wasabi for the local udon restaurant. Increasingly, the townsfolk become aware of a talent agency’s plan to build an opulent glamping site nearby, offering city residents a comfortable “escape” to the snowy wilderness. When two company representatives arrive and ask for local guidance, Takumi becomes conflicted in his involvement, as it becomes clear that the project will have a pernicious impact on the community. Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s follow-up to his Academy Award®-winning Drive My Car is a foreboding fable on humanity's mysterious, mystical relationship with nature. As sinister gunshots echo from the forest, both the locals and representatives confront their life choices and the haunting consequences they have.

Haydn and Mendelssohn - All Soul's Episcopal Church

Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) was an Austrian composer of the Classical period. He was instrumental in the development of chamber music such as the string quartet and piano trio. His contributions to musical form have led him to be called "Father of the Symphony" and "Father of the String quartet”. Haydn spent much of his career as a court musician for the wealthy Esterházy family at their Eszterháza Castle. Until the later part of his life, this isolated him from other composers and trends in music so that he was, as he put it, "forced to become original.” Yet his music circulated widely, and for much of his career he was the most celebrated composer in Europe. He was a friend and mentor of Mozart, a tutor of Beethoven, and the elder brother of composer Michael Haydn.
The six string quartets Op. 20 are among the works that earned Haydn the sobriquet "the father of the string quartet". The quartets are considered a milestone in the history of composition; in them, Haydn develops compositional techniques that were to define the medium for the next 200 years. The quartets were composed in 1772 at a time of tensions in Haydn's life, and also when Haydn was influenced by new philosophical and political ideas sweeping Europe. Some analysts see the impact of these emotions and ideas on the quartets.
Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) was a German composer, pianist, organist and conductor of the early Romantic period. His compositions include symphonies, concertos, piano music, organ music and chamber music. Though Mendelssohn was still a teenager when he wrote this quartet, he was already an experienced composer of chamber music. He wrote the quartet a few months after the death of Ludwig van Beethoven, and the influence of Beethoven's late string quartets is evident in this work.

The creator of Tales of Harassment, Barbie Lazaro, is an emerging stand up comedian whose content focuses combating street harassment. She uses comedy as a vehicle to cope with the slurs, whistles, and obscenities of Miami's mean streets. Tales of Harassment creates safe spaces for victims to use storytelling as a catalyst to resolve trauma associated with street harassment. Some of the stories are comical others aren't but through it all we listen, laugh and support each other.

One of the three artists featured in our current gallery exhibition, It's Not That Serious, Hackenswerth works are made up of large expressive colors and sprinkled with phrases on canvas and paper. Curator Maria Gabriela Di Giammarco writes, "Hackenwerth’s approach to painting is gestural, with each piece functioning as unique collections of emotion and media on a massive scale. Hackenwerth uses anything from spray enamel, to oil and acrylic paint, or collage to evoke the serious-unseriousness of absurdist or avant-garde movements past..."

New Art Exhibition Spotlights Interdisciplinary Works by Local South Florida artist, Patricia Schnall Gutierrez in a Solo Exhibition at the Burchfield Penney Museum in Buffalo NY.
Buffalo NY, Opening on May 10, 2024, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. Patricia Schnall Gutierrez: Remember Me will explore six decades of the multidisciplinary artist's narratives in the Project Space.
Working in sculpture, installation, film, collage, and performance, Patricia Schnall Gutierrez's work interplays between past and present to consider fresh perspectives on the narratives that shape women's lives. Through interrogating her own identities as a woman, artist, mother, and wife, as well as the realities of others in these roles, the exhibition explores the intersections, tension, acceptance, and challenges of these identities and the experiences they entail.
Schnall Gutierrez relocated from the NY metropolitan area to South Florida in 2007. She is a former resident artist of the Bakehouse Art Complex and Fountainhead Studios. She currently has an independent warehouse studio in downtown Hollywood.
The Burchfield Penney Art Center is the museum dedicated to the art and vision of Charles E. Burchfield and the art and artists of Buffalo, NY, and the state region.
