Anton Arensky: Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor, Op. 32, (1894), Carlos Simon: be still and know, (2015) and William Grant Still: Three Visions, (1936) arranged by Michael Linville.
Anton Stepanovich Arensky (1861-1906) was a Russian composer of Romantic classical music, a pianist and a professor of music. He was born into an affluent, music-loving family in Novgorod, Russia. Arensky was musically precocious and had composed a number of songs and piano pieces by the age of nine. He studied with Rimsky-Korsakov at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, graduating in 1882. Arensky then taught at the Moscow Conservatory where he befriended and was influenced by Tchaikovsky and Sergei Taneyev. During his twelve years at the Conservatory, he counted Rachmaninoff, Scriabin and Glire, along with the celebrated pianist Igumnov, among his students.
Carlos Simon (born 1986) is a native of Atlanta, Georgia, whose music ranges from concert music for large and small ensembles to film scores with influences of jazz, gospel, and neo-romanticism. Simon is Composer-in-Residence for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the inaugural Boston Symphony Orchestra Composer Chair, and was nominated for a 2023 GRAMMY award for his album Requiem for the Enslaved. Simon was a recipient of the 2021 Sphinx Medal of Excellence, the highest honor bestowed by the Sphinx Organization to recognize extraordinary classical Black and Latinx musicians, and was named a Sundance/Time Warner Composer Fellow for his work for film and moving image.
This piece was inspired by an interview in 2011 with Oprah Winfrey, in which she quoted: I have felt the presence of God my whole life. Even when I didn't have a name for it, I could feel the voice bigger than myself speaking to me, and all of us have that same voice. Be still and know it. You can acknowledge it or not. You can worship it or not. You can praise it, you can ignore it or you can know it. Know it. It's always there speaking to you and waiting for you to hear it in every move, in every decision.
William Grant Still Jr. (1895-1978) was an American composer of nearly two hundred works, including five symphonies, four ballets, nine operas, and more than thirty choral works, art songs, chamber music, and solo works. Born in Mississippi and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas, Still attended Wilberforce University and Oberlin Conservatory of Music as a student of George Whitefield Chadwick and then as a student of Edgard Varse. Because of his close association and collaboration with prominent African-American literary and cultural figures, Still is considered to be part of the Harlem Renaissance.
Judith Anne Still, the composer's daughter, commented on Three Visions. "The three segments of the suite, Dark Horsemen, Summerland, and Radiant Pinnacle, tell the story of the human soul after death: the body expires, and the soul goes on to an apocalyptic judgment. Three Visions, a piano piece, is arranged by our pianist, Michael Linville, for piano trio.
