At Eternity's Gate

Sunday, Dec 16, 2018 various times - English

Julian Schnabel’s ravishingly tactile and luminous new film takes a fresh look at the last days of Vincent Van Gogh, and in the process revivifies our sense of the artist as a living, feeling human being. At heart, this is a work of sheer imagination, an ode to the artistic spirit and to having a conviction so absolute that you must devote your life to it. And the pulsing heart of At Eternity’s Gate is Willem Dafoe’s shattering performance: his Vincent is at once lucid, mad, brilliant, helpless, defeated, and, finally, triumphant. The result is a kaleidoscopic movie experience - one that becomes just as much about the role of the artist in the world, about being alive and reaching for the eternal, as it is about the beauty and wonder Van Gogh left behind, never knowing his profound impact.

A Christmas Story

Sunday, Dec 16, 2018 at 2:00 PM - English

This musical, which received rave reviews on its Broadway run, is based on the movie classic that runs round-the-clock on television every Christmas. Set in the 1940s in the fictional town of Hohman, Indiana, the musical follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker and his quest for the Holy Grail of Christmas gifts—an Official Red Ryder carbine-action 200-shot Range Model air rifle. Rebuffed at every turn with a similar echoing response (“You’ll Shoot your eye out!”), Ralphie plots numerous schemes to achieve his desperate desire for the coveted BB gun. All the iconic scenes from the movie are here: Ralphie’s friend, Flick, getting his tongue stuck to the flagpole; his brother Randy’s snowsuit; the bullies, Farkus and Dill; the leg lamp award; the bunny suit; the Chinese restaurant, and more! A Christmas Story, The Musical will bring an exciting new dimension to those who have seen the movie and will certainly stand on its own for those who haven’t.

Primal Forces Theatre is proud to open the 2018-2019 season with Breadcrumbs at the Sol Theatre in Boca Raton. The play, written by Jennifer Haley, is an emotional drama that keeps the audience off-balance as it zips back and forth in time between a dark past and an uncertain future.

“We are thrilled to be back in Boca Raton, opening our season with a play that features two incredible actresses,” said director Keith Garsson.

“Breadcrumbs is a complex, time-travel drama in which an aging writer doesn’t know if the mysterious new stranger in her life can help unravel her pastor if she has darker intentions. The roles require great virtuosity of the actresses, and we are thrilled to have Angie Radosh and Jacqueline Laggy in this production.”Theories of identity are put under the microscope in this time-bending drama as reclusive fiction writer (Angie Radosh) with a fragile mental state must depend upon a troubled young caretaker (Jaqueline Laggy) to complete her latest project. In a symbiotic battle of wills, they delve into the dark woods of the past, unearthing secrets that shatters their notions of language, loneliness and essential self.

Jacqueline Laggy returns to Primal Forces after acclaimed performances in The Anarchist, Communion and Sex with Strangers, while three-time Carbonell award winner Angie Radosh makes her Primal Forces debut. “It’s another change-of-pace for both actresses,” continues Garsson, “and we look forward to another road less traveled.” haunting and tender Sarasota Herald-Tribune

Six Characters in Search of a Play

Sunday, Dec 16, 2018 at 7:00 PM - English

Sordid Lives creator Del Shores’ new one-man show, directed by Emerson Collins, proves once and for all that he is not a writer, he’s a self-proclaimed thief! In “Six Characters In Search Of A Play”, riffing on Pirandello’s classic title, Shores brings to life six one-of-a-kind characters he has met in real life that haven’t quite made it into one of his plays, films or TV shows. In 90 minutes, the audience will hear the truth behind how he collected these eccentrics and their stories as he portrays his hilarious, off-the-rails encounters with them.

The audience will meet “Yvonne”, the anti-vegetarian Dallas waitress; “Sarah”, a Trump-hating elderly actress with an inhaler in one hand and a cigarette in the other; “Jimmy Ray”, the evolving, Magic Mike-loving latent Georgia redneck; “Loraine”, the once-brilliant drama teacher who has lost her damn mind and is now obsessed with porn; “Marsha”, the monkey-hating lesbian with COPD; and “Aunt Bobby Sue”, the racist Republican with a heart of gold.

AfriCOBRA Collective at MOCA

Sunday, Dec 16, 2018 various times - English

The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami will present a groundbreaking exhibition celebrating the Chicago-based AfriCOBRA collective, in conjunction with the group’s 50th anniversary. In 1968, artists Jeff Donaldson, Jae Jarrell, Wadsworth Jarrell, Barbara Jones-Hogu, and Gerald Williams founded AfriCOBRA, which stands for African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists. AfriCOBRA’s visual language is defined by the use of text, bright "Cool-Aid" colors, dynamic, gestural markings, and raw, emotive, celebratory images of confident black figures. The vision these artists created went on to define the aesthetic of the Black Arts Movement. This historic exhibition will explore the founders’ individual careers, as well as AfriCOBRA’s philosophy and the impact of the group’s work on subsequent generations.

The exhibition will run from November 25, 2018 – April 7, 2019. Art Basel Miami Beach will take place from December. 6–9, 2018. Artist reception to be announced.

Admission to MOCA is $5, free for MOCA members and North Miami residents.

The Exile Experience: A Journey to Freedom

Sunday, Dec 16, 2018 from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM - English

The Exile Experience: Journey to Freedom is a pictorial account of the struggles that the Cuban exile community has endured since Fidel Castro's rise to power, and the successes they have achieved in the United States. Having covered the Cuban exile community and its struggle for freedom extensively throughout the years, Miami Dade College and The Miami Herald Media Company now present this journalistic chronology, which showcases the spirit and accomplishments of the Cuban American community. The permanent exhibition is housed at the College’s National Historic Landmark Freedom Tower, itself central to the story of Cubans in the United States.

MDC’s Freedom Tower was operated by the U.S. Government as a reception center for Cuban refugees from 1962 to 1974. “The building is significant because it represents the important story of the Cuban exodus to America and resettlement during the Cold War,” reports the U.S. Department of the Interior, which has also called the Freedom Tower the “Ellis Island of the South.” Though it operated in that capacity for only 12 years, the building has become an icon representing the faith that democracy brought to troubled lives, the generosity of the American people and a hopeful beginning that assured thousands a new life in a new land.

Relational Undercurrents

Sunday, Dec 16, 2018 various times - English

Relational Undercurrents is the first major survey of twenty-first century art of the Caribbean. The archipelago serves as an analytical framework, focusing on thematic continuities in the art of the Caribbean islands. Relational Undercurrents works against traditional understandings of the Caribbean as discontinuous—isolated and beyond comprehension as a result of heterogeneous populations, multiple linguistic traditions, and diverse colonial histories. The exhibition is divided into four sections: Conceptual Mappings, Perpetual Horizons, Landscape Ecologies, and Representational Acts. Each grouping features artists whose works have informed and shaped those themes. Relational Undercurrents includes painting, installation art, sculpture, photography, video, and performance.

Curated by Tatiana Flores, Associate Professor of Art History and Latino and Caribbean Studies at Rutgers University, this exhibition was organized by the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, California, as part of The Getty Foundation’s Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, an initiative examining the artistic legacy of Latin America and U.S. Latinos through a series of exhibitions and related programs.

The accompanying catalogue includes essays by curators, critics, and scholars that discuss particular artistic traditions in Cuban, Puerto Rican, Dominican, and Haitian art, and theorize the broader decolonial and archipelagic conceptual frameworks. The catalogue is coedited by Tatiana Flores and Michelle Ann Stephens, Professor of English and Latino and Caribbean Studies at Rutgers University, New Brunswick.

The Art of Banksy Exhibition is Coming to Miami!

Sunday, Dec 16, 2018 from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM - English

Miami will welcome the US premiere of “The Art of Banksy,” an acclaimed showcase featuring 80 original works created by, arguably, the most intriguing and talked about artist in modern history. “The Art of Banksy” has already generated excitement in Melbourne, Tel Aviv, Auckland and most recently in Toronto. Now Miami will host this spectacular exhibit in Magic City Studios, a part of the newly imagined Magic City Innovation District (MCID) in the Little Haiti neighborhood.

Banksy, whose identity is the art world’s biggest secret, is an enigmatic artist and world-recognized political activist. His graffiti-influenced stencil technique, often combined with anti-establishment slogans, is immediately recognizable and never fails to generate attention.

The Art of Banksy,” curated by Steve Lazarides, the artist’s former agent, displays the world’s largest collection of Banksy’s works and only features pieces that were created by Banksy for private art collectors. The collection offers original paintings, prints, sculptures and rarely seen pieces. Included in the exhibition is the iconic “Balloon Girl” piece, which was ranked in 2017 as “The United Kingdom’s number one favorite artwork,” the “Flag Wall,” an urbanized take on the famous picture of soldiers raising the U.S. flag at Iwo Jima, and many other pieces, no less compelling and equally thought-provoking.

There is no reason why there shouldn’t be a Banksy hanging in every single major contemporary art museum in the world. He is the most powerful recognized artist of a generation that’s been completely ignored by the establishment thus far. I’m proud that together with the collectors we have been able to assemble this collection now being presented in Miami,” says Steve Lazarides.

The Miami exhibit will be mounted in Magic City Studios at 6301 NE 4th Ave, in an area within Little Haiti known as Miami’s Magic City Innovation District. This prestigious exhibition of originals – all privately owned by collectors – offers a rare opportunity for South Florida to enter Banksy’s world. The 20,000 square foot raw warehouse space was specifically chosen as it resembles spaces where Banksy and Steve Lazarides previously mounted shows together.

Miami, with its thriving visual arts scene, is for us, the perfect city to premiere ‘The Art of Banksy’ in the US,” says Michel Boersma, Senior Vice President Family Entertainment & Theatre, Live Nation. “Together with Steve Lazarides, we have been able to assemble the largest collection of Banksy art ever exhibited, from collectors all over the world, which is fitting for a world-class city like Miami.

We couldn’t be any happier to host this incredible show at Magic City,” said Tony Cho, an MCID founding partner and CEO of Metro 1, the commercial brokerage leading leasing for the project. “This is one more example of the type of world-class art exhibitions and cultural alignments Magic City will bring to the Little Haiti neighborhood. We’re confident this will not only make the neighborhood an international destination, but also create vast opportunities for local businesses and residents.

To celebrate the opening of “The Art of Banksy” in Miami, the exhibition is partnering with the Magic City Innovation District Foundation and local community organizations, to give away 50,000 tickets to local children.

A showcase of this caliber will serve as a unique and accessible educational opportunity for over 50,000 local students,” said Miami Mayor Francis Suarez. “It not only speaks to Miami’s position as a world-class arts and culture destination, but it will also inject life into Little Haiti, giving our residents the chance to benefit educationally in one of our emerging neighborhoods focused on art and innovation.

Worldwide demand for “The Art of Banksy” is off-the-charts. Consequently, the exhibit is scheduled to be in Miami for a limited time only. Citi is the official pre-sale credit card of “The Art of Banksy” exhibit. As such, Citi cardmembers will have access to purchase pre-sale tickets beginning Tuesday, October 23 at 10AM EST until Friday, October 26 at 10PM EST through Citi’s Private Pass program. Felice Grodin: Invasive Species

Sunday, Dec 16, 2018 various times - English

Augmented Reality (AR) Exhibition

Felice Grodin: Invasive Species is a virtually interactive, digital exhibition of commissioned works by Miami-based artist Felice Grodin. The series employs the immersive technology of augmented reality (AR), and is accessible to visitors using iOS devices in PAMM’s outdoor areas and in the Padma and Raj Vattikuti Learning Theater on the museum’s first floor. This AR project is made possible thanks to a generous grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Influenced by geophilosophy—a field of thought shaped by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari that analyzes the relationship between physical and mental territories—Grodin draws on her training as an architect to explore the mutable within landscape, architecture, and her urban surroundings. Felice Grodin: Invasive Species interacts with PAMM’s architecture, evolving and transforming the museum’s environment for the duration of the exhibition.

Featuring a total of four digital works, the show launches with two AR site-specific works—Mezzbug and Terrafish (both 2017)—that engage with and virtually enhance the museum’s building. In Terrafish, Grodin overlaps PAMM’s hanging gardens on the waterfront terrace with the translucent body of a digital species she created, which is suggestive of nonnative jellyfish found in South Florida waters. By drawing on the destructive impact of invasive species and creating a new digital environment, Grodin highlights the transformative and unstable state of our ecosystem, speculating about a not-so-distant future affected by climate change and overtaken by uncanny creatures.

Felice Grodin: Invasive Species is an augmented reality exhibition that can be viewed via the PAMM App which is available for free from the App Store on iPhone or iPad. iOS 11.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone 6s, iPhone SE, iPad Pro, and newer.

Connectivity

Sunday, Dec 16, 2018 from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM - English

Through five thematic sections, Connectivity: Selections from the Collection of the Frost Art Museum examines how art objects, created across cultures and during different time periods, relate to one another and to myriad publics. In the first section, the notion of individuality emanates through an examination of portraiture and different representations of the figure. The exhibition explores shifting notions of dress and comparative elements such as gesture and pose. The second section considers belief systems, with an emphasis on myths and organized religions. Abstract languages comprise the third section and offer an opportunity to analyze works that implement color, line, and form in dynamic ways. Whether it is a longing for home or the memory of a cherished street corner, geographic spaces examines how the notion of place serves as a creative catalyst. The final section reflects on this particular moment and evokes the effects of war, climate change, and the general uneasiness of a citizenry during turbulent times.

Connectivity shares recent gifts, celebrates the collection’s treasures, and includes rarely seen objects from the vaults collected over the past 40 years since the museum’s inception in 1978. Select objects featured in the installation will be rotated periodically.
