Manuel Canales String Quartet in D Major, Op. 1, (1782), Ignacio Cervantes Danzas Cubanas and Joaquin Turina String Quartet in D Minor, Op. 4, de la guitarra (1911)
Manuel Canales (1747-1786) was born in the Spanish city of Toledo. He studied music with Jaime Casellas, director of the Toledo Cathedral Choir. He was said to have excelled as a cellist and bassist. Eventually, around 1770, he obtained employment at the court of the Duke of Alba in Madrid. It was in Madrid that he encountered the music of Boccherini and Haydn, both of whom are said to have had some influence on his style. Canales is thought to be the first Spanish composer to have penned string quartets.

Ignacio Cervantes (1847 - 1905) was a Cuban pianist and composer who achieved fame and recognition in his native country. Cervantes is best known for his considerable influence in blending various aspects of creole musical culture with that of Cuban music for a totally unique and appealing sound tableau. A child prodigy, he was taught by pianist Juan Miguel Joval, later by composer and tutor Nicolas Ruiz Espadero in 1859, and by the visiting American composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk. Gottschalk encouraged Cervantes to study at the Conservatoire de Paris (1866 - 1870) under Antoine Francois Marmontel and Charles-Valentin Alkan, where he was awarded first prizes in composition (1866) and harmony (1867).
Born in Seville, Joaquin Turina Perez (1882-1949) was a Spanish composer of classical music. He studied in Seville as well as in Madrid. He lived in Paris from 1905 to 1914 where he took composition lessons from Vincent d'Indy at the Schola Cantorum de Paris and studied the piano under Moritz Moszkowski. Like his countryman and friend, Manuel de Falla, while in Paris he familiarized himself with the impressionist composers Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy, whose music had a profound influence on his compositional practice.

Inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson's timeless tale, the musical follows the brilliant Dr. Henry Jekyll as he risks everything to separate the good and evil in mankind, only to unleash a terrifying and uncontrollable alter ego.
As his experiment spirals into a deadly battle for his soul, the consequences threaten everything he holds dear. POW! Presents Paul Rudnick's - The New Century
Saturday, Oct 10, 2026 from 8:00 PM to 9:30 PM - English

Meet the people you'd never invite to the same party and thank goodness someone did.
Plays of Wilton! (POW!) presents Paul Rudnick's The New Century, a wildly funny comedy bursting with unforgettable characters, outrageous laughs and enough heart to surprise you.
Smart, silly and gloriously over-the-top, The New Century brings together a group of people who could hardly seem more different until Rudnick reveals just how much they have in common.

There's Helene, an outspoken Long Island mother who proudly proclaims herself the "most loving mother of all time" to her three children; Mr. Charles, an extravagantly theatrical gay man who has retreated to Palm Beach after discovering that a younger generation of gay men finds him "too gay"; and Barbara Ellen, a Midwestern craftswoman whose cheerful collection of handmade creations masks the profound loss of a son to AIDS.
Their stories begin separately but ultimately collide in unexpected and hilarious circumstances as Rudnick asks where this "new century" might be heading and who gets to come along for the ride.
The result is unmistakably Paul Rudnick: rapid-fire one-liners, outrageous characters and fearless comedy wrapped around something far more poignant a look at LGBTQ+ identity across generations, the families we are born into and create for ourselves, and the ways humor can help us survive grief, prejudice and change.
When The New Century premiered at Lincoln Center Theater in 2008, critics quickly recognized Rudnick's ability to combine outrageous comedy with genuine emotional weight.
The New York Times: "The one-liners fly like rockets."
TheaterMania: "A laugh on every line."
New York Post: "Gut-busting one-liners."
Rudnick has said that he never intended The New Century to feel like simply a collection of unrelated one-act plays, but rather stories that "intertwine" and build into a complete theatrical experience.
Funny, provocative, touching and proudly excessive, The New Centuryis a comedy about people carrying the experiences of one generation into the next the losses, the battles, the absurdities, the hard-won freedoms and, above all, the laughter.
POW! alumni returning to The Foundry include Beverly Blanchette, Michael Gillespie, Betty Ann Hunt Strain and John Provasnik, along with director Greg Schuh. Making her POW! mainstage debut is Stephanie Manner.
"Paul Rudnick manages to be outrageous, smart and incredibly funny while still finding the heart underneath all those laughs," said Joseph Guidetti, Associate Producer of Plays of Wilton! "The New Centuryfeels like a perfect POW! play unapologetically gay, a little outrageous, and ultimately about people finding a way to understand and love one another."
"I first came to know Paul Rudnick through the movie Jeffrey, but once I discovered his plays, I fell in love with his writing," said director Greg Schuh. "His work is an actor's and director's dream funny, fearless and deeply emotional and The New Century takes us on a wonderful ride through growing up, loving, coming out and being loved."

Movement, Sound, and Abstraction
Saturday, Oct 10, 2026 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM - English

Join the Museum of Art and Design (MOAD) for an evening of embodied exploration where art, movement, and wellness converge.
Performance artist and educator Smita Sens works at the intersection of sculpture, dance-based performance, and advanced technology, researching how the body internalizes its environment and the weight of lived experience. Her practice explores how the human body becomes a living document storing tension, movement, memory, and emotion across a lifetime.

Sens will lead visitors through the Abstraction as Legacy exhibition, drawing connections between the works on view and the language of her own practice, inviting us to see abstract art not as something to be decoded, but as something to be felt, moved through, and moved by.
Following the tour, the evening deepens with Ressonnance, an immersive sound and wellness collective founded by YoungArts Jazz Trumpet Awardee Alum Stephane Clement and sonic architect Nicolaus Gelin. Clement weaves his German Haitian heritage into a rich jazz foundation, while Gelin crafts soundscapes that dissolve the boundary between music and transcendence. Together, they will compose a live response to the space and the works within it.
In collaboration, Sens and Ressonnance will guide guests through a performance that functions as an invitation to let the body lead, to listen, and to find in sound and motion a new way of moving through art, memory, and meaning.
This program offers an alternative way of navigating abstraction, not through the mind alone, but through the body, the breath, and the resonance of sound.
The Museum of Art and Design (MOAD) at MDC may document the event, including its attendees. By entering the area, and/or participating in the event, you consent to the recording and its use in any form.

Chromatic Frequencies invites viewers to slow down, look closely, and experience color as a living presence.
