Miami Light Project’s signature commission program “Here & Now” for Miami-based artists is on stage at Miami Theater Center from Wednesday, Sept. 18 through Saturday, Sept. 21.
The 2024 edition of the annual series features new short-form work from Arielle Francois, Junior Domingos, Lisa Kusanagi and Osmani Tellez, and Our Human Years, at Miami Theater Center, 9806 NE 2nd Ave., Miami Shores.
François is a first-generation Haitian artist who uses her work to honor Black joy and empower women, weaving hope and the mundane magic of their lives into every aspect of her art. The artist’s new multimedia dance performance “Where you waited for me.,” celebrates Afro-American and Afro-Caribbean culture through an exploration of Catherine Flon's legacy.
Domingos, a Brazilian artist, choreographer and dancer began his studies with circus technique. He is trained in a variety of physical movements including Pilates, Yoga, Ballet, Modern Dance, Jazz, Contemporary, Ballroom and Capoeira.
The new dance theater work Amalgam merges the rich traditions of Capoeira and Samba with contemporary movement. Through the innovative use of chairs within the traditional circle, Domingos creates a dynamic space for both celebration and transformation.
Tellez is a Cuban-born Miami-based dance artist who graduated from the National School of Arts in Havana and Kusanagi is a Japanese multi-award-winning artist with expertise in choreography and screendance. She investigates conceptual virtuosity through physical artistry and leverages her transnational upbringing and influences in the creative elements of her projects. Together, their new work, “Pinky Promises,” is a physical portrayal of the futile battle to break free from the palindromic cycle of relationships. In a duet, approaching ideas with childlike playfulness and curiosity,
Kusanagi and Tellez investigate and explore expectations, hopes, desires, pleasures, and disappointments in the subject of interhuman relationships beyond an archetypical love and romance setting.
Our Human Years is a South Florida-based ensemble known for ethereal melodies and soul-stirring harmonies.
Made up of Nicaraguan-American singer/writer Nicolle Garcia, South Florida multi-instrumentalist and media artist Dion Kerr, and Boston guitarist/media artist Tim Watson, their latest performance work, “A Flower In the Swamp,” premiered to an intimate audience at The Light Box at MTC in June 2024.
With the latest “Here & Now: 2024” audiences will experience a music video recording of this new project which weaves together music, visuals, and storytelling to explore the interconnectedness of nature, dreams, and ancestry.
